Enter the World of Bugs
A look at some really weird bugs.
Do you like bugs? Maybe you will like some of these, then again maybe you won’t. Here is a collection of some of the weirdest bugs on our planet.
The Lymantrid Moth (Dasychira pudibunda)
Do you know that this caterpillar will be fully grown by autumn of each year and turns into the most colorful caterpillar that you’ll ever witness? This caterpillar is widespread in Danish beech (Fagus sylvatica) forest. In Denmark is the other species but it is a dull grey moth that flies in June. Each female of this species can lay 300 to 400 eggs which are laid quite close to where she emerges from the pupae. Even though it is very hairy it can be moved easily by the wind. This is literally the ugly duckling turning into the beautiful swan except it is happening in bug land.

The Devil Flower Mantis (Idolomantis Diabolica)
Meet the “King of all Mantids”. It is very obvious why it is called this. It is one of the largest Praying Mantises that look like flowers. This mantis is noted for its beauty, its size and rarity.

Damselfly (Ischnura heterosticta)
This fly is noted for its elongated body. Its eyes are widely separated and it has two pairs of transparent wings. These wings are held folded together or open above the abdomen. They fly in tandem during mating. Most humans find them a popular subject for art and culture in some nations. Their striking colors add beauty to the world.

Orchid Mantis (Hymenopus coronatu)
This mantis is usually found in Malaysia and Indonesia. They usually hide in flowers they resemble waiting for their dinner to fly by.

Giant Camel Spider (Arachnid Solifugae)
This is probably one spider you wouldn’t want to see. This spider is native to Iraq and is not venomous. It uses its claws to catch its prey which is never bigger than the spider. They are also known for how fast they are and can run around 10MPH.

Giant Water Bug (Belostomatidae)
This water bug is known as the giant water bug or toe biters. These are some of the largest beetles in the world. They are very fierce predators which feed on fish and amphibians. When they catch their prey they inject them with a powerful digesting fluid. Their bite is one of the most painful in the world in rare cases they can bite humans.

Leopard Moth (Hypercompe scribonia)
This Giant Leopard Moth is also know has the Eyed or Tiger Moth. It has a very recognizable pattern of black rings somewhat like the leopard. Their coloring is also used as a defense against predators.

The first picture was a bit scary but they are all amazing! My dad used to collect moths so I’ve seen one of the leopard moths – great article as always, very entertaining.

Scary but fascinating. It’s amazing how many different varieties of bugs there are. The camel spider and the water bug were the scariest to me. I’d hate to wake up and see a camel spider next to my bed. Fascinating article, with great pictures!
