Endangered Species: the Tiger
A little something about tigers.
The tiger lives mostly in Eastern and Southern Asia. This animal can reach up to four meters in length and weigh up to 660 pounds. Tigers are very territorial and can live in many different places because they are very adaptable. The tiger has nine subspecies, three of which are extinct while the other six are endangered. Tigers are one of the worlds most recognizable cats. The living subspecies are the Bengal Tiger, the Indochinese Tiger, the Malayan Tiger, the Sumatran Tiger, the Siberian tiger and the South China Tiger. The three extinct ones are: the Balinese Tiger, the Javan Tiger and the Caspian Tiger. The Balinese Tiger was hunted to extinction in 1937. The Javan Tiger was thought to of gone extinct in the 1980s but their were unconfirmed sightings in the 1990s.
The last of the Caspian Tigers was hunted in 1970 in Turkey, although there are still some sightings on occasion. Caspian Tigers and Balinese Tigers were used by the Romans to fight gladiators in the coliseum. Tigers eat many different types of animals of medium size. They hunt their pray by grabbing onto the throat and strangling it to death. Tigers can run up to 35 to 40 miles an hour. A tiger will give birth to 3 to 4 cubs at a time. The captive population of tigers in the U.S.A. is thought to be larger then that of the wild population of the entire world. The tiger was voted the worlds favorite animal with dogs following close behind. Tigers are going extinct and they need to be saved. Really, how would you feel if there were no more tigers?
