Spiders are ancient animals with a history going back many millions of years. They have always been with us, an ancient source of fear and fascination. They are abundant and widespread and are natural controllers of insect populations. Wherever you live, you’re always close to a spider.
Spiders are arachnids not insects, but both spiders and insects belong to the largest group of animals on Earth, the arthropods – animals with hard external skeletons and jointed limbs (greek arthro = joint, podos = footed).

First off, “Tarantula” is not a species of spider. Tarantulas ARE spiders, yes, but there are over 800 different species of tarantula. Some of the more commonly known species include the Mexican Red-Knee, Chilean Rosehair, and Pinktoe tarantulas. And even then there are variations of some of those species, such as the Antilles (sometimes called Martinique) Pinktoes.

Athena, thank you for your comments on my article. Also thank you for setting the record straight concerning Tarantula as a spider and not a species. It begs the question though? If they are a spider, Then how can there be so many different species of Tarantulas ? Again thank you for your comments.

The reason the black widow has notoriety is because it is so widespread. Their bites are rarely fatal, however. Sixty-three deaths were reported in the United States between 1950 and 1959 according to wiki. I speculate that a lot of those were due to severe allergy to the venom. For comparison’s sake, seventy people die per year from being struck by lightning…
