Creepy Crawlies: Critters That Will Have You Jumping at Every Itch
The creepiest our world has to offer…
I hate bugs. Very little in life scares me, but I am a complete wuss when it comes to them. Or even things that look like them. I took my kids to a large museum awhile back, where they had a live insects exhibit. 23 inch centipedes. 6 inch long roaches. There were plenty of other nasty things to look at, but I couldn’t list a one, because I was long gone at that point.
We left the devilish exhibit, and the next stop was the mundane butterfly room. Or at least it was mundane, until one landed on the back of my neck. Now, I knew it was a room full of only butterflies, but I also knew with equal certainty that the foot long centipede had followed me and was now in the process of eating me. I made a rather hasty (and apparently, humorous) exit.
So that is what bugs and things that look like them do to me. Allow me to share a bit of the heebie jeebies with you.
House Centipede
We’ll start with this creepy little bastard, because you might very well see this one in your home. The first time I saw one, it was about two inches long and I thought the gates of hell had opened up.
Giant Centipede
While we’re on the subject, how would you like to wake up with one of these guys on ya?
Gaint African Millipede
And then there is the millipede. As a pet? Never in life.
The Roach
Normal roaches are nasty enough, but imagine a herd of these. Whenever I see stuff like this, I flinch for hours at the slightest tickle…
Rhinocerous Beetle
I can comfortably say that if I saw one of these, I would get my gun and shoot it. Repeatedly.
Cthulthu Larva (Abyssmal Sea Slug)

Animals like this make me glad I’m neatly tucked away in Wisconsin; no where near the damn ocean. Doesn’t look harmful, exactly, but on the creepy scale it’s a 10.
Coffin Fish

Tell me this doesn’t remind you of the little ones in Aliens.
Giant Isopod

Yeah, they’re like 2 feet long. The Flea from hell.

My wife hates centipedes & millipedes with vehement disdain. As a teenager she lived in Algeria for several years and the ‘pedes there apparently are deadly if they bite you..
The Madagascar Cockroaches aren’t so bad, -they are not the disease-carrying vermin like their namesake brethren.
On MSN.com they did a feature video recently of edible bugs, and it included Maddie roaches. Skewered through the head on kabob sticks (still alive) and dipt in batter, quick-dipped in boiled vegetable oil they are ‘deep-fried’ and (supposedly) delicious! Now I’m pretty open-minded about many things esp. in the consumables area, -but eating a freshly deep-fried cockroach might slow me down just a bit…
Good job mate! Keep ‘em comin’!

We have lots of big black Rhino beetles here and big black cockroaches that live in the yards. These two charecters actuallu inspired my piece The cockroach. very interesting article. I hope that I never come across the rest of these rascles I may have to order a thirty odd or something.
