Chimps

All you need to know about chimps.

  • Pan Troglodytes: Chimpanzee

  • Kingdom: Animalia

  • Phylum: Chordata

  • Subphylum: Vertebrate

  • Class: Mammalian

  • Order: Primates

  • Family: Hominidae

  • Genus: Pan

  • Species: Pan Troglodytes

Habitat Preference

Chimpanzee’s can be found in places such as Africa, and are usually in places like dense tropical forest, forest-savanna mosaic environments, and in mountain forests but mainly in a savanna habitat. To live in a number of habitats would show that a chimpanzee is adaptable.

Locomotion

Chimps have a quadrupedal movement. They move with all their limbs as well as
climbing trees or swinging from them for faster movement or to collect food such as fruit up top a tree.

Sensory Behaviors

Being that humans are closely related to chimpanzees, chimpanzees have a similar
sensory behavior to humans. Their large brains show great results on intelligence tests made by humans and shows that they are able to communicate with each other through symbols.

Protection

Chimps usually protect themselves by climbing up high trees being out of reach
form lions, cheetahs, and other cats. A chimp would also attack when it is in danger, even to the point were it would kill what danger it is in.

Level of Activity

Chimps are diurnal, meaning that they are mammals of the day. Chimps are very
active mammals. By day the males would be out hunting for as much food as they can while females would stay in shelter caring for a newborn chimp.

Feeding Habits

Fruits are what comprise of the chimps diet, as well as other food items. They spend
the day reaching 20 different types of plants as well as young leaves. You will usually see a great amount of fruit in an area where there are a lot of chimps. As well as fruits, insects and the occasional birds are what are made up of their diet, termites being the most nutritious insect. Females eat more insects then males. Chimps hunt for their food as well. What affects the amount of food they catch is how much cooperation they have among the males. Since chimps live where there are fruits, the more animals will come to try to eat them giving chimps more animals to hunt on.

Communication

Chimps have a lot of ways to communicate with other chimps such as using hand
movements, visual signs, making noises, facial expressions, or gestures. They have facial expressions such as the pout, display face, full open and fear grin, and the play face. Chimps use the pout when it is in need of food. The display face is would show feelings such as aggression or fear, or it would just mean it was being attacked or shows hostility. The full open grin is done while it is in joy and using the fear grin would be done when it is approached by a higher-ranking chimp. While they are bonding they would use their facial expressions to show how they feel. Chimps also have different calls, which is no similar to any other call.

Sleeping habits

Chimps sleep about nine hours a day, similar to that of a humans sleep length.
Chimps frequently wake up as they sleep. Things such as temperature, humidity, lighting schedules, and age would also contribute to a chimp sleeping habits.

Reproduction

Chimpanzees may live for more then 60 years(about 10 years longer then the usual
wild animal). Mating happens usually with the high male ranking chimps and females mate around the age of 8 giving the mother about 240 days till it has given birth. Newborn chimps are helpless mammals because of the fact that they are born week and would need their mother to help them until they are strong enough to go on their own. IT stays with their mother for more then 5 years at least.

Why is it endangered?

Chimps have been endangered for many reasons. One being that their place of
habitat is being destroyed and because of that their reproduction is being interfered causing their population to decrease. Illegal capture has also occurred to decrease their population as well as being hunted for food. Chimps are one of those animals that are in high risk for bast meat (wild animal meat) trade.

What is or can be done to save it?

What is being done is the building of many animal preserves. Where they would
care for animals such as the chimp giving it a safer environment for where they could live always from hunters and poachers. It would also how bring their population up because it would serve as a good place for mating. Zoos would also serve to be a good place were they are protected from the wild and feed regularly. Male chimps that live in zoos are usually bigger then those live in the wild.
