Alligators: From Possible Extinction to Survival
The alligator was once a very popular creature for people who liked to wear alligator shoes or hang a handbag on their arm. Things have changed.
From possible extinction to a thriving population, the ALLIGATOR is a real survival story when you consider that they have long been the target of unscrupulous humans who could see a market in shoes, bags and other items made from their skin. Happily, things have changed as federal regulations have served to protect the interests of the American alligator. Added to this, there is much less demand for products made from alligator hide with the modern environment friendly views.
Louisiana and Florida
Another benefit to the alligator population is that there are now well established conservation areas that serve to protect the species. Alligators are to be found in great numbers in the southern states of America, particularly in Louisiana and Florida in the lakes and swamps where they thrive. These creatures will feed on all kinds of other smaller animals such as fish, birds and lizards. They can be a real danger to humans which is why there are bodies organized to deal with wandering alligators who make their way into the human habitat.
Some golf courses in Florida are regular haunts for alligators who are attracted to their swampy areas and lakes. Special notices are in place to warn golfers not to get too near to these reptiles who will do severe damage given the opportunity. The alligator is generally viewed as the crocodile’s little brother. Similar looks and their teeth capable of crushing bones. There have been reports of humans being attacked, maimed and killed by alligators which serves as areminder to keep our distance.
Alligator shoes and handbags
Although there have been instances of attacks on humans, these are rare and as with most wildlife, they are in more danger from humans than the other way around. For many years alligators were hunted mercilessly for their hide which has long been used to make all kinds items and accessories for the pleasure of humankind. Alligator shoes and handbags have always been among the most sought after fashion accessories. The trade in animal skin products has of course diminished somewhat due to lack of demand by people who are now more conscious of endangered species.
While there are still some unscrupulous people out there who will gladly skin an alligator for money, they will find their customer base has diminished from years gone by. In spite of the threat of extinction, the alligator is now thriving with an ever growing population that is preserved and protected. The alligator is still a wild creature that should be treated with respect and although some keen enthusiasts do it, they are not recommended as household pets.
