Animals, like humans, have a classification in a degree of beauty and ugliness. In the wonderful world of animals, many animals appear to be weird, odd, and even have an ugly look that would probably kill you while looking at them.  Most people will not even give those extremely weird and ugly animals a second look. In the worst cases, these innocent animals are being killed, slaughtered or tortured because their weird look made people could not bear to look at them. As for the animal protection and rights organization, they feel a concern in the sharp decline of these weird animals as people pay no attention and care for them.

Here, I would like to say that these ugliest animals have the right to survive on any piece of land scattered across the earth. Their weird appearance is probably one of the ways they sustain their species on earth. Therefore, we should pay equal treatment to then while   dealing with these weird animals just like we would treat other living organisms. They do have their rights to ensure their continuity of species on earth. Neither graceful nor beautiful, these animals are nonetheless very unique and remarkable animals.

Matamata Turtle

The Matamata Turtles (Chelusfimbriatus) dwells particularly in the stagnant pools in Brazil and the Guianas. Its species can also be found in parts of the Amazon River, Peru, Venezuela and Trinidad. It has a bizarre look, with its straight-line shell length that reaches to 18 inches (46cm) or more. Its head and neck are flat and large, but are covered with warts, ridges and protuberances. The long snout enables it to breathe while almost completely submerged. The female turtle usually can breed to 12-28 round, hard-shelled eggs with each egg nearly 3.5-4cm in diameter in rivers or on high ground near the banks of small creeks. The incubation takes as long as 208 days.

Dobsonfly

This picture shows a larva (hellgrammite) of Dobsonfly (corydalus sp.) viewed under a scanning electron microscope with the enlargement power of 10 to 500 times from its original size. Through the high powered microscope, humans have viewed some shocking scenes that the human eye itself is limited to seeing.

Dobsonfly inhibits throughout the Americas, particularly in the north and central part of America, and in Asia, Australia and Africa. This insect can be rather weird and frightening in its appearance. Both male and female Dobsonflies can grow up to the length of 5 inches (12.5cm), and have long antennae. When they do not use the wings, they will be folded along the length of their walking stick-like bodies. The female can breed between 100 to 1,000 eggs on a branch or on rocks near a stream.

Monkfish

Monkfish (Lophius americanus) is also known as “Poor Man’s Lobster”, goosefish, “allmouth”, or anglerfish. It is a type of fish inhibits in the northwest coastal Atlantic area. It can grow up to a length of 5ft or more but the species with the length of 3ft are more commonly seen. It weights between 7 to 15 pounds but can also reach a maximum weight of 50 pounds. Its body is composed mainly of a huge, gaping mouth attached to a muscular tail.

Russian Wheat Aphid

The Russian Wheat Aphid (Diuraphis noxia) has very short and round cornicles (tailpipe structures typical of aphids) and it is pale green in color. This aphid occurs any time of year in the western half of Kansas, and it is more common to see it in an area within 50 miles of the Colorado border. It can grow up to 2mm long. Its saliva is toxic to the plants as it can cause the leaves of cereals, grasses and wheat grasses to turn white, and curl up. It sometimes causes symptoms include yellow, purple or discoloration longitudinal streaks on the leaf and prostrate growth of the plant.

Almiqui

Almiqui (Solenodon cubanus) is the Cuban species that has been extinct for many years. Until 2003, people in Cuba traced its existence near the eastern mountain of Cuba. When it was caught alive, its weight was 24 ounces and was found in healthy state. However, it was then released to the wild after the completion of two-day scientific study.

Almiqui appears to be a small animal with dark brown to black hair and small eyes. It resembles a large brown rat. From its nose to tail, its length can reach between 16 to 22 inches (40 to 55cm).

Weevil

Weevil (Hylobius Piceus) is commonly seen in the central and northern Europe, Siberia and the northern part of North America. It has a black body with sparse brownish hair and its adult is measured 12 to 16.5mm long. Besides that, it has a relatively long, oval and downward face along with its thin and lengthy legs. The female breeds to oval and white eggs with 2mm long each.

The Big Head Turkey Vulture

The Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) is marked with its dominant feature of having a large, bald and red head. It is one of the largest birds and thus it can grow as big as an eagle with up to 32 inches long. Its species are widespread from the southern Canada to the southernmost tips of South America, inhibiting particularly in the subtropical forests, deserts, pastures and shrub lands. While soaring, it maintains its stability by holding its wings slightly upward, making its wings up in a slight dihedral or V-shape.

Hawaiian Hoary Bat

Hawaiian Hoary Bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus) is described with its short and rounded ears, besides its black and naked rims. The yellow buff throat is its hideous feature, making it looks quite horrible and scary. It is commonly seen on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, and Maui, but with very less species seen on Oahu and Molokai, inhibiting particularly in the wet and dry areas, and from sea level up to 13,000ft. It emits fairy high frequency (ultrasonic) echolocation calls to as high as 30 KHz to detect its flying prey.

Warthog

Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) is an unusual blackish or brown pig lives in Africa, and it is commonly seen in moist and arid savannas. It is identifiable by its barrel-like body, a huge and wide head decorated with six facial warts, and the two pair of huge curved canine tusks which are used to fight against predators. Its size ranges from 0.9 to 1.5m (2.9 to 4.9ft) in length, 25 to 33inches in height and 50 to 150kg (110 to 330 pounds) in weight. While running, it holds its tufted tail high upward.

Muscovy duck

The Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) is a large native bird to Mexico, Central and South America and. It has dark brown or black features mixed with white in a mottled pattern decorated its head and wings. His ugliest features are its fleshy and bare red and caruncles on its face, over its eyes and at the base of its bill, making its appearance like it has guts all over its face. The male can measure from 10 to 15 pounds in weight, while the female with 5 to 7 pounds. The female breeds from 8 to 10 white eggs, with an incubation period of 35 days.

Ayer-ayer

The Ayer-ayer (Daubentonia madagascariensis) is the world’s largest nocturnal primate that is also a native animal to Madagascar, and dwells predominantly in the rainforest, deciduous forest, or other forest canopies. Nevertheless, nowadays, many of its species inhibit in the cultivated areas due to a massive deforestation. It can be easily viewed at altitude of 700m from the ground. The male has a weight of 2.5kg, but the female weights about 100g less than the male. It can grow from 30 to 37cm from head to body.

The Philippine Tarsier

The Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius syrichta) is found to be the smallest known primate as its size is no larger than an adult man’s hand. In other words, it is a tiny animal with only 4 to 6 inches (15cm) measured in height. The male weights 134g, while the female weights 117g. It is more active at night than the day time. The illegal logging nowadays, have greatly damaged its habitat and thus causing this animal to decline sharply. It dwells predominantly in the province of Samar, Leyte, Mindanao and Bohol of the Philippines.

New sucker-footed bat

The new sucker-footed bat (Myzopoda schliemanni) is a new species of bat discovered by a scientist in Madagascar. It has suckers (large flat adhesive organs) attached to its hind feet and thumbs which are used to attach itself to the smooth surface. It also has a feature of large ears with odd mushroom-shaped lobe. According to Steven Goodman of the Field Museum in Chicago, US, this bat had been considered as an endangered animal. The loss of the moist tropical forests has caused its species to decline gradually.

Star-Nosed Mole

The Star-nosed Mole (Condylura cristata) is a known smaller mole found in the north-eastern United States and the eastern Canada. This species is also widespread in areas reach 55°N latitude in Quebec and Newfoundland. It feeds on aquatic insects, mollusks, small invertebrates and worms. Its adult counterpart has a length in a range from 15 to 20cm, weights between 35 to 75g and has 44 teeth. Its ugliest feature is that it has a circle of 22 mobile, pink, fleshy tentacles attached at the end of its snout, making its appearance looks rather scary.

Frilled lizard

The frilled lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingie) belongs to the family of lizards called “dragons.” It dwells predominantly in dry forests and woodland in the north-western and northern parts of Australia and in Papua New Guinea. It can grow up to 95cm long. Its tail made up two thirds of its body. It has a brightly colored but often blue frill folded against its neck and head all the time. At times of danger or alarmed, it extends its frill, rises its hind legs, opens its yellow-colored mouth, unfurls its colorful, pleated skin flap that encircles its head and hisses.

Komondor

The Komondor (Canis familiaris pastorialis villosus hungaricus) is one of the most unusual bred dogs. It is a kind of the Hungarian livestock guardian dog. It has a densely growth of much of unique long, thick white coats (resembles a mop) that covered all over its body. These striking white coats can give it an awed appearance. The male has a height of at least 271/2” at the shoulders while the female is 251/2” tall. While large, the male only weights 80 pounds and the female weights more than 60 pounds.

Yeti Crab

The Yeti Crab (Kiwa hirsute) is a new species of deep-sea crab discovered in the South Pacific Ocean in March 2005. It has legs that are covered with long, pale yellow hairs. This crab is an unusually large creature found in 15cm long in a group of crustacean. It was found at the depth of 2,200m (7,200ft), 1,500km (900miles) south of Easter Island in the South Pacific.

Axoloti

The Axoloti (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a type of Mexican salamander. It has a relatively soft and sensitive skin and gills. As it can breathe through moist skin, it can stay out of water for short periods, as long as its skin does not dry out. Its life span is up to 10 to 15 years. It has an amazing regenerative ability as it will heal readily even if it gets its body part injured.

Angora rabbit

The Angora rabbit is one of the oldest types of domestic rabbit bred for its silky and soft wool. This species is thought to be originated from Turkey hundred years ago. Today, they are four distinct breeds of Angora rabbit which include the varieties of the English, French, Giant and Satin, of all possessing their own unique breed characteristics. Among them, the “English” breed appears to be the smallest, weighing in at 5 to 7.5pounds. In contrary, the “Giant” breed is considered to be the largest, weighing in at 10 to over 20 pounds.

Dumbo octopus

The Dumbo octopus (Grimpoteuthis) is a benthic creature which has the ear-like fins protruding from the top of its head-like body. It dwells on the ocean floor with an extreme depth of 300 to 400m. It can grow up to 20cm. It belongs to a soft or semi-gelatinous octopus with a pair of fins located on its mantle and webbing between its arms.

The Blobfish

The Blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) is a type of strange-looking fish that dwells in the deep sea water off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. According to the marine reports, this creature can withstand at depths where the pressure is several dozen times higher than at sea level. Its jelly-like flesh is less dense than water, and hence this low-density flesh (an alternative to a gas-filled swim bladder) has benefited this creature to swim in less deep waters.

The Proboscis monkey

The Proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) is one of the world’s unusual monkeys. Locally, it is also known as the “Dutchman Monkey.” This species inhibits particularly in the mangrove forests, swamps, and lowland riparian forests in Borneo. It has a very large protruding nose, with the male being distinctive much larger and heavier than the female. Apart from this large nose, it also has a bright red, visible penis and black scrotum. Generally, its upper body may either in pale grayish yellow or reddish brown in color. When it gets excited or angry, its nose will swell and turn red. Its infant is born with black fur and a vivid blue face.

Hagfish

Hagfish is a creature that has an elongated, eel-like body along with its paddle-like tail. It may appear in a color ranging from pink to blue-grey, and may have black or white mottling, to which its colors depends wholly on its species. It may have its eyes present or absent, and it has no obvious fins or jaws, but it has a typical short tentacle-like protrusions around its mouth. It measures approximately 18 inches in length, with the Eptatretus being the largest species measured at 127cm, while Myxine pequenoi and Myxine kuoi being the smallest measured at less than 18cm. An adult hagfish can secrete substantial amount of sticky slime or mucus enough to turn a bucket of water into a thick and sticky gel within the minutes.

Purple frog

The purple frog (Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis) is a type of large burrowing frog with a distinct and bloated appearance that is commonly seen in the Western Ghats Mountains of Southern India. This species of frog, also called Pignose frog was discovered in October 2003. When found, scientists believe it is a living fossil which seems to have split up from other frogs about 150 million years ago and yet it has not changed much thereafter. It has a small head along with its rather odd pointed snout. It is dark purple in color and hence it is named as a purple frog. It feels like a big bag of jelly when you hold it in your palm.

Oyster Toadfish

The oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) is an ugly toad you probably would not want to stay too long looking at it. It can reach a maximum length of about 38cm. Its appearance is marked with yellowish pattern of brown oblique bars. This creature can survive in a worst condition even it is fed with very little food. In 1997, NASA sent this Oyster toadfish to the space to investigate the effects of microgravity on the development of otolithic organs.

Unknown creature

This creature is unknown to date. It has all its body enveloped with a muscular flesh. It is not only weird at its appearance, but also has an ugly look that no one will wish to rear it as a pet. It likes to lay its body upon a bulk in a cool and moist place.
