10 Things You Probably Don’t Want to Know About Snakes

There is a lot of myth and folklore surrounding snakes and their capabilities. Here are ten things you probably didn’t know about these fascinating creatures.

  1. Boa Constrictors and Pythons are the world’s largest snakes and they can grow up to thirty feet long
  2. Around two and a half thousand species of snake have been discovered and these include five hundred toxic varieties
  3. Most snakes have excellent close range eye sight but snakes that burrow underground tend to be blind
  4. Snakes cannot hear sound that comes through vibration of airwaves but they can sense vibration in the ground, so it isn’t true that the cobra hears the snake charmers flute
  5. Some snakes lay eggs in batches like other reptiles but other bear live young which are miniature, fully formed adults
  6. Snakes live for twenty to thirty years depending on the breed
  7. Snakes smell by collecting scent particles on their flickering tongues and depositing them onto a special scent gland situated in top of their mouths
  8. In order to inject venom, a snake has to bite its victim. Contrary to popular belief no snake has a stinger in its tail.
  9. A fully grown Python can swallow a small animal weighing around a hundred and fifty pounds
  10. Snakes cannot leap, or jump into the air. They coil and strike upwards but cannot strike at a distance of more than half their own body length.

    No. 9 is scary. I weigh 150 lbs., so a Python could swallow me whole? This is the stuff of nightmares.
