The Giraffe – The World’s Tallest Animal! Print E-mail
The Giraffe is the world’s tallest living animal – a male giraffe grows up to 16-18 feet tall (4.9 – 5.5 metres). The tallest ever giraffe was 19.2 feet tall! Scientists call the giraffe Giraffa Camelopardus. the giraffe is the tallest animal on earth today The word “Giraffe” comes from the Arabic word for “tall”. In olden times the giraffe was called a “Camel-leopard”, since it had spots a bit like a leopard, but walked a bit like a camel. Because the giraffe is so tall, it has some other special features.

First of all, to pump blood all the way up its long neck, the giraffe needs a very strong heart. In fact, its heart weighs 26 lb (12 kg), making it the biggest heart in the animal kingdom! Also, it has special blood vessels in its head to prevent it fom fainting when it lifts its head suddenly!

When a giraffe is kept in a zoo, it is sometimes the tallest thing in the whole zoo. This means it’s the most likely to be struck by lightning during a thunderstorm! In the wild, giraffes live amongst trees that are taller than they – and besides, the places they live have much less lightning than most other places in the world.

  55. wounded Says...

    On January 29, 2010 at 11:48 pm

to kimikoakaka: Your comment about the giraffe was very interesting, but the fact is it does not have the largest heart in the animal kingdom, not even close. All of the great baleen whales and the sperm whale have much larger hearts. The adult Blue Whale’s heart averages about two thousand pounds.
Compare that to the giraffe’s 26 lbs. I doubt the giraffe’s heart would make the “top ten”. Other animals with larger hearts include the Elephant Seal and the Whale Shark. Where did you get your information? Did you just make this up?

Blue whales are the larges living organisms ever to dwell on this planet. Reaching up to 45M in length, this gentle giant is dissapearing quickly. Before whaling scientists estimated about 315 000 blue whales. Today, less than 2000.. Scientist’s studies show that the next fifteen years will be last years of this beautiful creature.

Wounded, your criticism of Kimikoakaka was not fair. When Kimiko said the animal with the largest heart is giraff, i think he meant land animals. You know, when generaly we talk about animals, our thought goes to land animals. All the exaples you gave of animals that have larger hearts are all sea animals. You even said Kimiko’s article is interesting which means most of the statements there are true. Then, how can you say he made it up. That’s not fair at all.
