The Roan Antelope

Facts about the roan antelope.

Roan antelopes can be easily found anywhere along the Savannah.  Their coat is usually a beautiful reddish brown colour.  They reach up to a meter in height and weigh 260 kilograms. 

The areas in Africa that they are most likely to be found is in either grassy or shrub lands.  Unlike most of the other species on antelope Roan antelopes gather groups of fifteen or more together as a pack.  They are most likely more active early in the morning; they get scared very easily but will only run a short distance away.  The main predators they need to look out for are lions and hyenas’.   

This particular species of antelope can live up to 17 years and reach their sexual maturity at the age of 3.  Their tail can be as long as three feet in length.  Roans’ give birth to only one antelope at a time.  The males are always in a constant struggle to be the leader of the herd.
