The Fascinating Penis Plants

These plants include the word "penis" in their common names for obvious reasons. Take a look.

Penis Cactus

The members of the cactus family come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. As cacti grow, some of them can form interesting shapes that a few have been labeled as having “suggestive” ones.  But there’s a Trichocereus bridgesii cultivar that is unabashedly called penis cactus. It is also referred to as the penis plant. Does it really look like that male anatomy?

We generally think of cacti as succulent plants with spikes all over them, but this one has a smooth and spineless upper “shaft” that looks like the erect penis of a grown man. Even the tip has a slit, resembling the small opening at the tip of the male anatomy. By the way, it has a German name: Frauenglück, which means “Women’s joy.”

Expect to see this in the collection of cactus lovers worldwide.

Penis Flower

The penis flower is more commonly called Titan arum. This flower is famous for a lot of interesting reasons. It holds a world record: the flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence (cluster of flowers) reaching a length of over 3 meters (10 ft) long. It has also the largest known corm weighing 50 kilograms (110 lbs) to 91 kilograms (200 lbs).

When somebody says, “Take time to smell the flowers,” make sure you’re not near one of them because it is the stinkiest that’s why it is also referred to as the corpse flower.

The Titan arum grows only in the rainforests of western Sumatra, Indonesia and rarely flowers in the wild. When cultivated, only advanced gardeners can make them bloom due to pollination techniques.

The Titan arum was given by botanists the scientific name Amorphophallus titanium, from the Greek amorphous (without form), phallos (penis) and titan (giant). It loosely translates as giant shapeless penis.

Penis Tree

Here’s a high quality photo of this tree. It’s one of the 600 species of the Pandanus palm. And those are the roots protruding from the lower trunk. It’s not really officially known as the penis tree, but it’s understandable when nobody would argue if people call it as such, right?

This is an interesting article. I am a gardener and plant lover, but have never heard of these before. Does the Penis Flower come through only as a flower, and not a plant first? By the looks of the picture it is growing directly out of the soil, with only a stem and no foliage. Just curious.
