Sunflowers are Fun to Learn About
Everything you need to know about Sunflowers.
All last week I have been watching these big beautiful Sun Flowers open up. First one at a time then suddenly an entire bed bursts into bright soft yellow peddles. They fold open from the inside out as though they were a sleepy child begrudgingly crawling out from there sheets to greet the day. The smiling faces of the flower standing proudly up on its thick stock to pronounce look over hear.
Sun Flowers with their Latin name of Helianthus Annuus have one of the few names that directly make sense to an English perspective. From the root “helio” meaning Sun, and “anth(us)” meaning flower combine for a description of a flower that is as strait forward as the flower is bold. This flower with will make you take notice.
From Minnesota to Washington hear in the states Sunflowers are unique in being the only mass produced agriculture native to this territory. The seeds are often harvested up to seven days after harvest and sometimes used to make Sun Flower seed oil or sun butter (an alternative to Peanut Butter). However even though Kansas adopted the flower as its state flower in many states it is considered a weed. It can hinder human ambitions by its moisture loving nature and often pops up where it is not wanted.
Even thou it’s on its own land a wide variety of species have been developed, mostly in Japan, Europe, and America. Some of the other varieties you might come across include: the ‘Red Treasures’- a short flower with lots of branching and a three inch yellow/orange flower, the ‘Starburst Aura’- a semi double yellow flower with a green center that grows a six inch flower, the ‘Sondown’- is about 5’ tall with a strong yellow and red bicolor flower head, and man.
