Six Ways Nature Has Taught Humanity
This article is about wisdom learned from nature. It explains how six aspects of nature are responsible for the bulk of man’s knowledge today, from the study of animals to astronomy.
The wisdom learned from nature is available to us both night and day if we activate our mind of awareness. The whole foundation of man’s knowledge is based on what nature has taught him, from the beginning of time until now. Nature has given the world many fantastic bodies of wisdom throughout the ages. Through observation and the in-depth study of various components of nature, humanity has been given the opportunity to progress significantly and do great things such as cure diseases, and travel into space. Animals, plants, weather, geography, biology, and astronomy are some of the aspects of nature that are responsible for the foundation of knowledge that humanity has today. Let’s examine these aspects of nature one by one.
Animals- from the beginning of creation man have had a quite distinguished relationship with animals. In the creation story of Adam and Eve, Adam was responsible for naming all the animals in the Garden of Eden as well as communicating with them. Eve certainly could communicate with the snake, an animal that seemingly had the ability to persuade. Nevertheless, animals such as birds, monkeys, and lions have taught man significant wisdom.
By observing the behavior and activities of birds, man has discovered new grounds for inventions. One of the greatest inventions, the airplane, was invented by studying the air dynamics of bird wings in flight. Studying birds has also giving us the ability to predict seasonal changing. When birds such as Blue Jays and the Red Robbins fly south in late autumn, we expect a seasonal change to winter
We have also gained wisdom from monkeys, animals with behavior and characteristics closest to humans. By observing how these creatures interact with one another and raise their young, people can learn a great deal about parenting, socialization and responsibility. Many experiments with monkeys have proven that they can understand man as well as (in some cases) imitate human language.
Some of the most magnificent creatures are big cats. Lions, the most fierce of the big cats often represent courage. Throughout history, the symbolism of the lion has been used significantly in many cultures, literature, and religion, not only as a sign of strength and power but also kingship. In the bible, the symbolism of the lion is used in both the old and the New Testament. Also, in the bible, Christ is represented as the Lion of Judah. Both Samson and David confronted and slew the lion, known as the fieriest of beast. This implied that whoever conquered the lion’s great power was as great and courageous as the lion itself.
Plants- plants are the most cherished components of nature. They are used to decorate the interior and exterior of our houses as well as gardens in our back yard. They provide oxygen. For many of us who loves raising plants, they are dear friends that speak and listen to us. But most of all, we have learned that we need plants in order to survive. Plants provide nutrition and medicine for us.
Without proper nutrition the body cannot function. The human body must have a certain amount of plant food in order to maintain health and wholeness. In plants we find vitamins and minerals and other nutrients. For hundreds of years, certain plants have been used for alternative medicines. Garlic helps attack free radicals that are responsible for cancel in the body. Carrots help keep the eyes strong and sharp. Cranberries are good for the urinary system, killing a number of bacteria and diseases. In the medical field, many modern day medicines also are made with various plant properties. All in all, the whole of creation is dependent on plants in some way. Animals cannot exist if there are no plants to consume and if plants and animals cannot exist, there can be no food available for humanity.
Weather- the weather offers us a great deal of wisdom. When clouds form and begin to darken, we know that something ominous is on the way and we take cover. Also the weather has taught us to recognize seasonal changes. When flowers begin to bloom, we know that spring and summer is near. When trees begin to change into their beautiful fall colors, we know that autumn and winter is near.
Also we have also discovered that weather affects our emotions. Pleasant weather helps us to smile more easily than unpleasant weather. When the sun is shining s upon our face, we may go to the park for a picnic or to the beach for a swim. When we are blasted by winter’s coldness, we seek shelter in our home by the fireplace or snuggle up underneath a warm blanket in our bed.
But nature does not always give us pleasant lessons. Many times nature confronts us with dangerous weather such as hurricane Katrina and tornadoes that devastate the Midwest, hundreds if not thousands within their path. We learn that it is unwise to ignore danger. We also learn to appreciate life and those who we love. We realize that life is unpredictable and that we cannot always prevent the unthinkable. We are therefore watchful.
Geography- geography teaches us that the surface of the earth is always changing. Sometimes those changes are gradual other times they are drastic. The geographical landscape that existed thousands of years ago, do not exist in the present time. This change is gradual. On the other hand, the arctic is melting at an alarming rate because of global warming. This change is drastic.
Geography also teaches us many lessons about the origin of the earth by studying ancient rocks and fossils. Many scientists are able to predict the age of the earth and the habits of extinct creatures that lived long ago as well as the ecological system they inhabited. They are also able to determine whether or not great bodies of water ever existed over huge stretches of dry land.
Scientist has also discovered how earthquakes could trigger geographical movements that may impact the stability of the nations and places in the earth. For example, if the movement of the San Andreas Fault in California triggers a massive earthquake, the whole nation might slide off into the ocean, giving rise to the formation of new islands and land. Also in the arctic, the melting of the glaciers may contribute to rising sea levels that could overrun land. Natures sometimes teaches us in harsh ways when we neglect and abuse its significance.
Biology- biology has given us some of the most revolutionary discoveries. It’s amazing how the human body operates with the ability to heal itself. The immune system is a dynamic healing system that is designed to eradicate every disease that attacks the human body, whether it is heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and the like. Once scientist find out how to use the full power of the immune system, the need for medical insurance will be greatly minimized. This will be a miraculous time indeed.
By studying nature, scientist has discovered many other forms of biological knowledge such as genetics and photosynthesis. The discoveries and experiments with plant reproduction lead to the study and discovery of the human reproduction system and the XY Chromosome theory. In fact, the branches of biology, chemistry, and astronomy owe its very existent to the wisdom of nature.
Through the study of nature we learn about the earth’s origin. By studying how various species evolved over time, scientist can determine the kinds of species that existed millions of years ago. They can also determine what kind of atmospheric conditions existed as well as the kind of land mass that prehistoric creatures survived in. Nature continues to teach us the wisdom of the ages.
Astronomy- many secrets of nature have been revealed through the study of astronomy, one on the oldest sciences. Just by observing the movement of the sun and the moon we can predict the seasons. We know that in the summer the days become longer whereas in the winter the days become shorter.
Through the study of astronomy we know that the earth is a planet among many others. There are thousands more stars, planets, comets, and galaxies that have not been discovered. Mars, Jupiter, Pluto and the other nine planets that make up the twelve were only a beginning. We live in vast and endless universe.
Because nature is vast, it will always have an abundance of knowledge yet to be discovered. It is an eternal system that is without end. There will always be something new to learn about nature and something old to unlearn. But nature must be allowed to stand on equal ground with humanity. If nature is neglected and abused, then all of humanity will suffer the consequences. Nature and humanity are one.
