Pigeons: who knew?
Pigeoons are not just building dwellers that leave their poo all over….
There are a couple types of pigeons that i think deserve a note:
The Birmingham Roller Pigeon:
Domesticated member of the species Columbidae
Called the “roller pigeon” because of its ability to roll backwards in the air. these little guys are regular acrobats summersaulting in spectacular display. The rolls of the roller pigeon are fast and tight.
And like all Pigeons, they do possess the homing ability.
These roller Pigeons are used in competions where they are judged on the depth of roll, quality of the roll and sychonization of the rolls with other Pigeons.
The Modena Pigeons:
originated from Modena, Italy in the 1300’s, during which time they were used for competitive flying also known as ‘kit flying’.
Around 1876, this breed made its way into the rest of the world. First imported to Germany, then England before arriving in the United Sates.
The Modena Pigeons are no longer used in sport but are merely used for exhibits and showings.
They are now known as the “Fancy Pigeons”
