Salmonella

This document explains what Salmonella is, who first discovered it, where, symptoms and basically everything you need to know about Salmonella.

  • Salmonella was first discovered by Daniel Elmer Salmon in 1885 with an early microscope
  • Salmonella is bacteria that can harm you. When infected by Salmonella, it is found in the lining of the small intestines.
  • Its carriers are from almost any animal especially chickens. You can also get this infection by recent people that got Salmonella. Pets can usually have this disease, especially reptiles. Eating raw meat is a major factor for getting this disease. Patients with impaired immune systems can infect others with Salmonella too. The most likely time that you might get Salmonella is when you’re either really old or really young.
  • After getting the disease that Salmonella produces, also known as Salmonella Enteroclitis, you can feel the pain after 8-48 hours. You can be infected for 2 weeks. But at minimum 1 week.
  • Salmonella can range from a very mild disease to a very severe disease
  • Approximately about 40,000 people get Salmonella every year in the US. 2/3 of them are below 20 years old. The most common time that the disease can be caught is between July and October.
  • Some of the symptoms of Salmonella are cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomit, fever, chills, muscle pains and a lot more
  • Some signs that you have Salmonella are pink spots on your skin, feeling cold and lots more
  • Some treatments for Salmonella can be drinking electrolyte solutions to replace fluids lost by diarrhea, not to drink milk products, eat bananas, rice, apples and toast. If a baby is infected with Salmonella then it is best that the baby keeps on drinking from his/her mother’s breast.
