Dust Mites: Tiny Animals Living on Our Skin and Homes

Did you know we all have little tiny animals or insects living on our skin and homes? Did you know they each leave 20 droppings a day? Read to find out now.

Every house in the world contains these dust mites, which you may or not have heard of before. It is also true that they can cause infantile eczema to many thousands of people around the world. But firstly, what exactly are they? I didn’t know what they were either until a few months ago and I was disgusted after finding out!

Dust mites? Haven’t heard of them before!

Basically, dust mites are tiny animals related to spiders and they leave the dust we see around our homes. They are so small that we cannot see them with the naked eye! However, the population of these dust mites are considerably high particularly if your home is comfortably warm whereas some homes contain very little due to the cold climates you may live in.

How do they live and what do they eat?

Dust mites survive by eating the dust that comes from our skin. They can reproduce very fast when the living conditions are right. However, each dust mite can only live for a small period which lasts for a couple of weeks. Wherever these dust mites go, they leave droppings everywhere! Each dust mite leaves around 20 droppings a day. So imagine if there are one hundred thousand dust mites in your home each leaving twenty droppings a day, this will shockingly calculate to 2 million droppings a day!

Can their droppings harm us?

Studies have shown that dust mite droppings can actually cause asthma and allergy diseases.

For those who are affected by the droppings, homes with very few of these dust mites have actually improved their asthma!

But how will I know if my children are suffering from asthma due to the dust mites?

There are some ways you can find out yourself if your children are suffering asthma from dust mites. But it might be better off talking to your doctor about it as they have the knowledge to identify the problem.

I’m glad you didn’t include pictures. I’m getting itchy too! A company called Norwex sells a biological concoction that is supposed to add good soldiers to the biological warfare who eat not only the dust mites, but their droppings as well. You spray this stuff on your mattresses and pillows twice a year. It seems to work. I’ve had less excema since I started to use it.
