World’s Smallest Fish

The smallest fish in the world has only been known about for three years.

Most people thought that the smallest fish in the world is the Pacific Goby from India. Wel,l they were wrong. It is actually the uber tiny Paedocypris fish. The Pacific Goby measures in at 8 mm but the Paedocypris is actually 7.9 mm. Some interesting facts of the Paedocypris fish are a vertebrate. The large size on record it has been is about 10.3 mm. The water they life in is not rainwater. The rainwater would actually kill them. They need to live in water that is about 100 times more acidic and has a pH as low as 2.9. We humans could not drink this water since at that level of acidity since it becomes toxic and could hurt us so much it could be deadly. This fish’s habitat is slowly being destroyed due to logging of forest and also fires are harming the fish as well. There is one good thing about the Paedocypris is that in major drought it can live in very small amounts of water.

Fun Facts

  • first found at the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research at the National University of Singapore
  • found about 3 years ago
  • males have some sort of pad on the front to help attach them to the female during matting
