Three Astounding Pregnant Males Species

These three species: seahorses, pipe fish, and sea dragons are the only males that get pregnant.

Besides the amazing fact that males are the actual pregnant ones in the partnership, they are also beautiful, graceful, and wonderful creatures!

Sea Dragons

Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta is celebrating the pregnancy of a male weedy sea dragon. This lucky male carries the eggs on his tail, and this is only the third time ever that an endangered species is pregnant in a U.S. aquarium.

This sea dragon has around 70 fertilized eggs, and is giving birth in early to mid-July. It is rare for sea dragons to be pregnant since researchers do not know what will get them in the mood to mate. While mating, the female lays dozens of eggs, and then transfer them to the male’s tail, which look like red grapes.

The Aquarium has 18-inch sea dragons with snouts, colorful sea horses bodies, and multiple fins. There are about 50 aquariums around the world that have sea dragons.

Sea Horses

To compete for the female seahorses’ attention, male seahorses combat with each other by pulling tails, dragging each other, snapping at each other with their snouts, wrestling with their necks, exhibiting their pouches by opening and closing them.

While pregnant, the male seahorses cannot move around to look for foods, and they have to eat whatever in the area. Seahorses remain monogamously for the entire mating season, and they perform daily ritual of entwining their tails, and spiraling in a dance to the surface. These rituals keep their productivities synchronized.

The male seahorses will be pregnant for three weeks, go through 72 hours of labor, and release up to 200 baby seahorses. After only a few hours of the painful birthing process, the male seahorses are ready to get pregnant again.

Louie Jerome has written a fascinating article on Fabulously Beautiful Seahorses Dance in the Ocean, which you can learn more.

Pipe Fish

Pipe fishes take shelter in coral reef areas, sea grass beds, and sandy lagoons. Some live in fresh water, and can be found all over the world. There are many types of pipe fishes, and they are often live in pairs.

The pipe fishes have unusual color patterns like stripes or bands on the body, and spots/stripes on their tail. They are slender, and mostly well camouflaged.

The males brood the development of eggs in his thin skinned abdominal pouch, which might includes eggs from three to four different females, until they hatch. The eggs hatch in five to six weeks as the tiny version of the adults.

These amazing species are a joy to watch. Get to the aquarium, watch the marvelous beauty of nature, and be in awe at their fascinating life.

To bad it doesn’t work the same way for humans. If it did families would only have one child, thats for sure.

Great research, Icy! Too bad human males couldn’t be the ones to have babies, though with some of those beer bellies, you might think they were pregnant.. with twins! =)
