The Gender – Changing Fish

It is weird to hear about humans changing genders, but for these fish, it is just a regular thing.

 The Red Snapper

The red snappers are found in the Red Sea, and lives in families of around 10 fishes. There is one male leader, and all the others are females. When the male leader dies or leaves, the strongest female in the family will change genders and become the new male leader.

Scientists have done experiments on this specie of fish. The put one male red snapper in a fish tank and the other females in another. When the tanks are close together and the snappers can see each other, the females didn’t change genders. But when the tanks are separated or when a cloth is put over one tank, one of the females will change into a male.

 The Black Sea Bass

Gender-change is just a phase in life for the black sea bass. They are born in the wild as females, and when they reach about 2-5 years of age, they change to a male. Black sea bass in captivity can change their gender much faster than those in the wild. This is causing a problem for the fish breeder in commercial fishing industry.

 Parrotfish

Parrotfish are brightly colored fishes. Males and females can have totally different colors, and it even varies between juveniles and adults. The color difference between genders have once led them to be known as to distinct fish. The gender-chageing phase will require them to change both size and color, since males are typically larger than females.
