The blue whale is the largest animals of all. It is a sea creature, and as you know, it is not a fish but a mammal. That means, it gives birth to young ones and the infant blue whales drink their mother’s milk.

Because it has lungs, it comes to the surface of the water to breathe in air.

An adult blue whale is over 35 meters long and weighs over 120 tons. That is about the length of a row of 10 average-sized rooms and more than the weight of twenty fully grown elephants!

Very few people will ever see these gigantic sea creatures because they have been hunted for centuries and are now almost extinct. In 1972 a law was passed against killing the blue whale.

Many environmentalists believe that there are far too few blue whales alive fro them to increase their population to any great number.

These rare and wonderful, gentle giants live in the cold polar seas. They feed on plankton, which are tiny shrimp –like creatures. The whale scoops up millions of these minute animals in its mouth. The sea water is strained through baleen, which they horny bristles are hanging from the roof of its mouth. The plankton are trapped behind the baleen and then pushed down into the throat with the tongue.

So some of nature’s smallest creatures nourish and feed one of the largest ever.

  • The size of the blue whale compared to man, an elephant and the extinct brontosaurus.

*Extinct- no longer found alive.
