Our Passion for Tropical Fish

My main passion in life as you know is gardening but I also love pet keeping and we own a collection of delightful tropical fish.

From a young age i can remember my father always had a fish tank filled to the brim with tropical (fresh water) fish and i was always involved in their upkeep. I think it is important for children at a young age to be around animals and to have pets of there own if possible as it enlightens them into the care and respect of animals as a whole.

When i moved into my own home i was lucky enough to purchase my own tank which was quite small and thankfully last year we upgraded to a larger model which is now 190litres in size and is of the corner type which fits snuglyinto the corner of our living room and makes a fantastic talking point with family and friends.

We house a good arrangement of fish in our tank and like to keep a colourful mix which all like to live side by side happily! after trial and error we finally achieved a harmonious mix of fish and now they are so happy they like to breed on a regular basis!

One fish that has amazed me is our “bristle-nose catfish”, i have had her for two years and on Friday 5th June of this year we decided to get her a male companion just to keep her happy, well they must have settled down pretty well as today 7th June they paired up and spawned a clutch of fifty five eggs!

The pair laid there eggs on a large chunk of driftwood in the centre of the tank and dad is guarding them withhis life and protecting them from the other inhabitants of the aquarium, he is also constantly fanning the eggs with his fins to keep fresh water circulating around the eggs (this is apparently very important for the embryo development!)

We are so amazed that the fish have bred so soon and after just two days! so far all is going well and hopefully we will have new babies in around five to six days so i will keep you all posted on what happens.

Fish-keeping is such a tranquil and relaxing hobby and i love nothing more than just sitting and watching them carry on in there own little watery world, and to be honest with you, i don’t think i would have it any other way!

My father was also a tropical fish enthusiast. I found your article enjoying. I’m in the process of opening my own tropical fish store and have started a blog detailing the steps I’m taking to achieve this. You can find my site at http://www.theseaport.blogspot.com if you are interested in taking a look at it.
