A giant stingrays stingray species are arrested in Thailand was claimed as the largest freshwater fish. Imagine, estimated to weigh just 450 kg, or almost half a ton.
Wide expanse of his body about 2 meters and 2.1 meters long. When found, tail no. If including the tail, estimated total length of stingrays is approximately 5 meters.
Fish were arrested on January 28, 2009 in an expedition conducted by the National Geographic in Thailand. The arrest led biologists from the University of Nevada, zeb Hogan. The expedition is part of a giant fish search project Megafishes Project to document the 20th largest freshwater fish in the world.
The discovery of this giant stingrays give new hope for Hogan and his team even more than previous estimates. This could put a giant stingray in the top position of the Megafishes Project.
“Frankly, we do not know how heavy these stingrays. But it’s obvious, giant stingrays fish has the potential to be the toughest clean water,” said Hogan who is also an Emerging Explorer at National Geographic.
Stingray population in Thailand is considered already be extinct, although the discovery of several new populations started to increase lately. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is now entering freshwater stingrays into the list of endangered animals.
