Green Sea Turtles
This is about the life of a Green Sea Turtle.
Natural predators: When the Green Sea Turtles are in eggs; racoons, crabs, and ants raid the nest and then eat the turtle eggs. When the turtles have just hatched, they have many predators including most birds, crabs and many other sea animals. Once the turtles are full sized and in adulthood they have no main predators seeing as their shell will protect them most of the time, but occasionally a shark will attack a turtle.
Harvested for consumption:
Even though turtles have no animal predators, humans will still hunt the turtles for their meat. Hunting usually occurs in parts of Asia. Humans will also take the turtle eggs after the female has left them to hatch.
Capturing for parts of the turtle:
Green Sea turtles are caught in many parts of the world, because they have many body parts which can be used for other purposes. For example: oil, cartilage and the turtle’s skin. They are also hunted for their shell but the shell is only used a decoration and isn’t used in other products.
Fishing: Green Sea turtles are caught in big fishing nets used to catch fish. Over 150,000 turtles die each year because they have been caught in fishing nets. Luckily the government is finally taking some action and have made the TED (Turtle Excluder Device) which is a net which can have a small part open if it is pushed hard enough, that means that the turtles can escape but the fish can’t escape.

Indigestion of pollution: Green Sea Turtles are dying from swallowing pollution. They mainly try to eat plastic bags, because the plastic bags look like jellyfish which are a main part of the Green Sea Turtle’s diet. Turtles won’t die for eating plastic bags if people would put their rubbish in the bin and don’t litter.
Hunting: The amount of hunting that is taking place is unsustainable. This means that too many Green Sea turtles are being hunted, and not enough are being born at the same speed. Therefore if the hunting doesn’t stop soon, the Green Sea Turtles will be extinct. The main hunting that affects the turtles the most is the stealing of the turtle eggs, meaning not only are the turtles being hunted but their population isn’t growing, because there are no new baby turtles.
New predators: The Green sea turtle now has predators that usually aren’t found in their environment. These predators are… dogs. Dogs are allowed on beaches and eat everything, which includes Green Sea Turtle eggs. As dogs aren’t part of their natural environment, Green Sea Turtles have no way of protecting their eggs from dogs.
Stop littering: One of the main turtle deaths is indigestion of plastic bags and other pollution. Therefore people should not litter. The government should explain to everyone that if they litter a turtle dies. The government should also make a law that people must put their rubbish into a bin at all times and if caught littering, they will get a fine.
Make laws to stop the hunting: Hunting is the other main reason for Green Sea turtle deaths. This hunting must be stopped either by the government or by animal loving organisations. The government should create laws against the hunting of turtles. Organisations can make protests against the hunting of turtles. Together they will be able to stop one of the main reasons of Green Sea Turtle Deaths.
