Fabulous Starfish From Tropical Seas

There are more than 2000 different varieties of starfish in our oceans.

Sea stars, or starfish have an amazing vascular system. They pump sea water through their bodies continuously. They have very small jaws and tube feet which they use to attract objects for protection and to get food.

Brittle stars are the fastest moving and most mobile of all starfish. These creatures are symmetrical in shape and most varieties of starfish can regenerate limbs if they lose them. This happens often because the arms are very brittle.

Six rayed starfish has a good senses of smell, touch and taste and they do respond to light. They eat small prey whole but if the meal is large they are able to distend their stomachs outside of the body to accommodate it.

Starfish can open the shells of bivalve sea creatures with their tube feet and can then slide their stomachs in between the shells in order to digest their catch.

There are around 2000 varieties of brittle starfish which are mostly found in the tropics. These vary in colour according to their habitat.

These creatures eat microscopic organisms and decaying matter that is found in the mud at the bottom of the sea.

Either stars will swim away if they are disturbed or sense a threat. Some feather stars have five arms and others may have as many as 200.

These fish get around by crawling, walking, or swimming but most of the time they are found clinging to sponges and corals. Feather stars are nocturnal and are seen in the daylight with their arms rolled up.
