Blobfish: Science Fact or Fiction

How about an animal that is half horror movie star and half fish? I give you “Blobfish.” This guy is not a new find, but it is certainly worth revisiting. Every aspect of this creature matches what you would expect: fat, lazy and slow.

The Blobfish is only found in the deep waters around Australia. And while it is a fish found in the bottom of the ocean, it doesn’t actually sit. Though, instead of the female laying and leaving eggs behind her, the female Blobfish will actually sit on them until they hatch. Apart from this mammal-like behavior, they hover just above the sea floor moving incredibly slowly, if at all.

Instead of hunting or looking for food, they will simply just eat whatever floats by in front of their mouths. Because of their amazingly low output of energy, there is little need for extra sustenance. When viewed underwater, this fish resembles the human face (although be it incredibly ugly.) When taken out of the water to be studied or if caught by a fisherman, it will quickly dry up and lose its blob-like form.

The last question, is this Blobfish something found in Science Fact or merely Science Fiction?
