Amazing Sea Creatures

Because of their home depths, some sea creatures have been virtually unheard of. Recent studies have come through and many new sea creatures have been discovered though. So take a dive with us beneath the blue waves and take a peek at some truly amazing sea creatures.

Goblin Shark: Found in Japan, South Africa, and Portugal makes the Goblin Shark one of the most, if not extreme, rarest shark in the sea. The Goblin Shark is located nearly 3,940 feet (1,200 m) below making it a very long ways down. They have a very unusual snout that is used to help the creature find food in its deep, dark chasm. Because the shark is so rare, little is known by scientists though one thing is fact: the Goblin Shark is pretty harmless!

Pygmy Seahorse: These Seahorses are the size of a grain of rice (it is one of the smallest sea horse in the world!). It is about 15 mm in length, no more. Scientists believe they’re consumers of zooplankton. Their population is diminishing though because they’re used to treat sexual dysfunctions and consumed in Asia, roughly 45 tons annually!

Pistol Shrimp: The Pistol Shrimp generates a burst of sound and air used to paralyze and murder its prey, consisting of fish or smaller shrimps. The snap produced by its pincher’s generate a bubble that collapses, causing a big, loud bang; scientists have measured the temperature of the bubble (inside) and the result is at least 10,000 degrees Kelvin (18,000 degrees Fahrenheit!)

Frilled Shark: The Frilled Shark is found around 600 meters below sea level. It is the most primitive, bearing close resemblance to the extinct Paleozoic sharks. The shark’s teeth are tricuspid, meaning they have three points. Amazing though is the fact that a fisherman had found one of these elusive creatures. This remains amazing in the fact that the Frilled Shark remains thousands of feet beneath the water surface. The Frilled Shark was transported to the Awashima Marine park but it died shortly afterwards.

Chimaera: The Chimaera is another relative of the sharks and rays, often dubbed the ghost shark. Located on their spine is a toxin so highly venomous that one drop could kill a man. This is highly unlikely though since they live at depths of up to 8,000 feet!

Gulper Eel: The Gulper Eel is one of the most bizarre creatures in the sea: they sport a huge mouth (in order to swallow larger fish), and an extremely long tail. They live about 10,000 feet beneath the sea though, from time to time, are usually found in fishers nets.

Box Jellyfish: The Box Jellyfish truly deserves its name as the most deadly of all sea creatures; the Box Jellyfish has 60 tentacles with a length of up to 10 feet. They are packed with thousands of stinging cells that activate at the merest human touch. Their venom is so excruciatingly painful that the victim immediately goes into shock and could possibly drown. The toxin attacks the heart, nervous system, and skin cells throughout, making it one of the world’s most dangerous venom’s.
