A Weird Fish

A very odd fish found on the ocean floor.

This ewwy, gooey looking fish ia called a Chimaera.

Thay are related to both sharks and rays.  They lay eggs with a leathery case, and have claspers like sharks.

One the non shark side, they have upper jaws that are fused with their skull.  They also lack the many sharp and repklaceable teeth that sharks have.  Chimaera have three pairs of large permanant grinding tooth plates.

Temperate ocean floors is where they call home, about 2,600 meters (8,500 ft.) down.  They grow to a length of 150 centimeters (4.9 ft), some do have a very6 long tail.  In some species their elongated snout is modified to an even longer sensory organ.  A soft smooth, smooth body with no scales, a bulky head, a single gill opening and colors ranging from black to brownish, make up the exterior view of this strange creature.

These unique creatures are equipt with a venomous spine in front of the dorsal fin that is used for defense.

Internally the skeletal system is made of all cartilage, no bone.

New and interesting under sea creatures are still being discovered.  The ocean is is a vast and mysterious place. We have yet to touch all the areas there are.  Facinating life lives in the strangest environments and have interesting attributes due to where they live. In the deep dark ocean there are creatures that have glowing and flashing light, ones you can see right through and ones that have their own fishing poles.  Explore the deep and see what you find, you might be surprized at some of the lie that lives far below.
