Making Use of Enzymes

Brief explanation on how and why enzymes are used.

Some microorganisms produce bio-molecules called enzymes, most enzymes are proteins which pass out of the different cells where they are made and can be used in different ways. Biological detergents may contain protease’s and lipase’s to remove stains and grime by digesting them as though they were food in your stomach. Protease’s, carbohydrase’s and isomerase’s are all used in the food industry, in baby food for instance where food has to be mashed up and to a certain state semi digested to help the baby’s digestive system cope with the more difficult to digest solid food.

Enzymes catalyse reactions at relatively low temperatures and normal pressures reducing costs in large scale industrial procedures this is because enzymes (and all other catalysts) lower the activation energy required to initiate a certain chemical reaction. Enzymes are considered by many scientists as more efficient than a competing mechanical process. On the other hand, enzymes only work well under certain atmospheric conditions, and are expensive to produce because of their operational condition restrictions.
