Hummingbird Moth

Some more info.

I recently posted a photo of what looked like a type of bumblebee.  I couldn’t find any info under bees so at my mom’s suggestion I looked under moths as she thought that’s what it might be.  Sure enough that’s what it was.  It’s called a hummingbird moth.  Funny because I thought it looked like a bumblebee and a hummingbird  had a baby!  My photo wasn’t so clear so I found one courtesy of Wikipedia.

The Hummingbird moth is a small moth that flies during the day.  It has a long proboscis used for collecting nectar.  It has a wingspan of about 5 cm and is active from May through September.  Many people mistake it for a hummingbird because of the way  it moves and the small tuft of hair on its backend, making it look like feathers.

My dad used to collect moths for years, there are some really unusual ones, this being one of them. Enjoyable article Sheila, thanks for sharing.

Seen these before. Not often, but easily mistaken for a hummingbird, or a very, very fast (and rather large) bumblebee.

We call them Hummingbird Sphinx Moths here. They are fascinating to watch and sometimes can be tricky to photograph. You got a really nice shot!!
