  1. “Flower Kisser” is the Portuguese name for “Hummingbird”.
  2. Male hummingbirds have more colorful feathers than the females.
  3. Female hummingbirds raise their young without help from the males.
  4. A hummingbird’s diet does not consist of only nectar. They also eat spiders and gnats for protein.
  5. Hummingbirds must eat every 15 to 20 minutes to maintain their energy.
  6. The outside diameter of a hummingbird’s nest is 1 to 1 1/4 inches.
  7. Hummingbirds have very weak feet. They must use their wings to shift around in the nest.
  8. Hummingbirds can fly backwards, forwards, upside down, sideways and hover in the air.
  9. Hummingbirds can fly at speeds up to 30 m.p.h. They can dive at 60 m.p.h.
  10. During the day when hummingbirds are active, their heart rate is between 480 and 1,260 beats per minute. At night when they are resting, their heart rate drops to 50 beats per minute.
  11. Hummingbirds breath 250 times per minute.
  12. A hummingbird’s tiny body measures between 2.5 and 8 inches.
  13. Hummingbirds weigh approximately 1 ounce.
  14. The size of a hummingbird’s brain is 4.2% of its total body weight.
  15. Hummingbirds have a life span of 5 to 10 years.

    We have them around our house every summer, I am not sure what species they are but certainly lovely.
    I know you are not suppose to put red dye into their feeders, because its killing them, poor things.
