Human Skeletal System
The human skeleton is made up of 206 bones. The functions of the skeleton are to provide support, give our bodies shape, provide protection to other systems and organs of the body, to provide attachments for muscles, to produce movement and to produce red blood cells.
The system of bones that serves as a framework for the body is known as the skeletal system. This system provides protection to internal organs like the heart, the stomach, the lungs, the liver and the intestines. This framework consists of many individual bones ad cartilages. There are bands of fibros connective tissue also the ligaments and the tendons, connected with the parts of the skeleton.
The human skeleton consists of three subdivisions. These are
a. The Axial
b. The Visceral
c. The Appendicular
The axial skeletal comprises of the vertebral column, the spine and the skull. The visceral skeletal comprises of the lower jaw, some parts of upper jaw, and the bronchial arches, including the hyoid bone.
The appendicular skeleton is the one of which the hip and shoulder girdles and the bones and cartilages of the limbs belong.
