The vessels that carry blood away fro the heart are called the Arteries. This arteries extend through out our body. The arteries that are located near the heart are larger in size, it branches into smaller sizes as it goes farther from the heart in a more numerous smaller vessels called the arterioles. The large arteries are heavy and strong and they have elastic muscular walls.

Because of their elasticity, they can take the pressure of the blood that rushes from the heart. The blood that comes from the heart is under a high pressure, but the large arteries can manage to take it as they have elastic muscular walls which will expand whenever the blood rushes through with a great pressure.

Compared to the veins who also have thick walls, the arteries are much stronger. They were built with a thicker wall considering that the blood that runs through them have much more pressure than the blood that runs through the veins.

Arteries are resistant to injury because of their elastic thick layer of wall.
