Sex Determination

Why are we female and/or male?

Have you ever wondered why you are female and/or male? At first, I thought it’s a matter of chance that at times, we turn out to be female then some just become male. But there are scientific explanations for that. And if you are not happy with your sex then you might consider blaming your father.(LOL)

The determination of an offspring’s sex depends upon the sex chromosomes or what is scientifically termed as gonosomes.Gonosomes are of two types, the X and Y chromosomes. Our mom, having the mature ovum, carries two X chromosomes in diploid cells while the male, obviously our father having the mature spermatozoa carries half X and half Y chromosomes. So, female parents never contribute other gonosomes except for X. When ovum or the matured female cell is fertilized by a sperm bearing X chromosome, then the result will be a female(XX). In contrary, if an ovum is fertilized by a sperm carrying Y chromosome, the resulting offspring will be a male(XY). This means that it’s always a father’s contribution that determines our sex since female parents carry X chromosomes at all times.

My sister in law has 3 girls. My first with my husband was a girl. My mother in law was wondering if we knew what the youngest was going to be. I told her the baby had a Y. She had NO clue what that meant. So I went out and got a little bib that said something about little boys being grandmothers favorite and gave it to her.

Thanks for an article to share with those who don’t know….

Very interesting article. My boys go mad when I tell them they actually started out as girls! LOL I also watched a documentary that said it was down to some hormone that the mother produced while the baby is an embryo (i think) and that determines whether they will be gay or not, so its not a life choice as some people think!

I think that if there were such a thing as a YY chromosome, we would have destroyed each other a long time ago!!!

all is well with the man s y chrome

but the x and y in mans sperm are not fifty fifty

and its that y guys who move slower than x lazy boys

thats why younger fathers can inject slow moving y further up the moms birth canal
so let the fast speedier spurt can be utiised well when boys are younger

as older parents with sperm ejaculation speed gets reduced and help moms and pops x-x to mate and hence more chances of females

sex early and produce kids when ur younger thats if u want to prove you are a man and have y also

rest if u only want to enjoy later on then treat girls and boys alike
