Memory Techniques: Improve Your Memory

Short term memory exercises for your brain will help to improve brain memory power, improving attention and leading to faster thinking.

Improve Long Term Memory by Quizzing Yourself.

Learning new facts and new words by quizzing yourself is more effective at improving memory recall than simple repetition. Repeating words over and over doesn’t allow the brain to create associations-quizzing does. Teachers find that regular quizzing works for improving memory in children and adults.

When you are learning new facts or words on your own, you can experience the same benefits by self-testing to improve your memory. Self-testing improves memory recall by creating keywords which the brain uses as clues when required. Self-testing allows people to practice the skill they will need when a word or fact is required. That skill is retrieval and it is improved with self-testing.

Start Your Day with Coffee

Coffee is known to be stimulant but new research done in rats indicates that persons over 65 may increase brain memory and improve motor coordination by having three cups of coffee daily. This increase in brain memory is thought to be due to the polyphenols present in coffee. The polyphenols present in roasted coffee beans protect brain cells from oxidative damage. This information was presented in a paper published on October 28, 2009 in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Increase Brain Memory Power with a Power Walk Every Day

Brain memory power can be increased by walking at least six miles every week. New research published on October 13, 2010 in the medical journal Neurology, shows that persons who walk at least six miles every week lose less gray matter volume and cut their risk of developing memory problems by as much as 50%.

Do Short Term Memory Exercises

Short term memory exercises for your brain will help to improve brain memory power, improving attention and leading to faster thinking. Short term memory, which is also known as working memory, is what we use to remember which song we just listened to, or what we were looking for when we entered the supermarket. Braingle, puzzles, riddles, games and brain teasers all help to improve short term memory. Starpisces has written many good brain teasers.

Luckily, I don’t need better long-term memory, it is quite good. Though, short term one is pretty f*cked up, I sometimes even go to toilet and forget why until I get there. I always start thinking of something else before I get somewhere and well, then forget simple things and remember a lot of useless things …
Anyway, nice tips, I already do the second point, starting my days with coffee.

I’ve read a few memory books and it’s true that word association and quizzes does help a lot for us to remember. I think the more fun it is, the more stimulated our brain is, the easier we can store info in our heads..

Lew, The research also determined that people who drink too much coffee don’t experience the benefit. I think it’s pretty hard to reach that limit though, which they say is around 15 cups a day.
