Functions of Blood

What are the functions of blood?

  1. It carries inhaled oxygen from the air sacks of the lungs to the different parts of the body.
  2. It carries the by-products of oxidation (carbon dioxide) from the body cells to the air sacks of lungs for exhaling.
  3. It delivers digested food from small intestine to all the body cells.
  4. It regulates the body temperature. This is caused due to the capillaries situated in our skin which help to keep the body temperature constant at about 37 degree centigrade .
  5. It protects the body from diseases. This is because the white blood cells kill the bacteria and other germs that cause diseases.
  6. It carries waste products called urea from the liver to the kidneys so that it can be excreted out of the body in the form of urine.
  7. It carries hormones from the endocrine glands to different organs of the body (where they are needed).
