What is Dopamine? Where does it come from? It is a neurotransmitter that takes place in alot of animals. Phenythlamenewhich occurs in the brain, acts as a neurotransmitter activating the receptors. There are five types of Receptors: D1, D2, D3,
D4, and D5. They also have Variants. Several areas of the brain also produce dopamine.
Two of them being Substantia Nigra and Ventra Tegmental Area. It is also a hormone that gets released by the hypothalmus. It inhibits the release of Prolactin.
It takes it from the anterior lobe of the pituitary.
There is also a medication made from dopamine. It acts on the sympathetic nervous system. This Medicine has side effects that cause increased blood pressure and heart rate. In fact, it cannot cross the blood-brain barrier except for in patients with
parkinsons disease and dopa-responsive dystonia. So it doesnt have an effect on the central nervous system. L-dopa can be given because it is a precursor to dopamine. That is why this medication can cross the blood-brain barrier.
