Dermis and the Specialized Organs

The description of the dermis’ specialized organs.

The dermis is the layer that lies underneath the epidermis, and it is composed entirely of living cells. The dermis contains these 3 specific organs: sebaceous glands, sweat glands and hairs.

Sebaceous glands

Tiny organs that generally open into hair follicles on the surface of the skin. They produce an oily secretion, called sebum, which is your skin’s natural lubricant. The oiliest areas are: the scalp, face, around the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead.

Sweat glands

Located all over the body. There are thousands of them and their main role is to control and regulate the body temperature. When sweat evaporates on the skin’s surface, the temperature of the skin drops.

Hairs

Growing out of the hair follicles, these can help to keep the body warm by trapping air underneath them. There are no hairs on the soles of the feet or the palm of the hands.

The state of your skin is an overall sign of your health. It reveals stress, lack of sleep and a poor diet. Take care of your health and your skin will benefit.
