Freaky Underwater Creatures

A collection of nine disgusting, odd, and plain scary sea creatures.

1 Sea Pig
This odd invertebrate is found about 1000 feet underwater and feeds on nutrients in the mud. It is also called a Scotoplane and is in the sea cucumber family. They live close to each other numbering in the hundreds. They are 2 to 4 inches long and they have tentacles.

2 Giant Isopod a large Isopod related to crustaceans for example crabs and shrimp.They live south of Australia and Tasmania on the sea floor.

3 Axolotl cute yet strange underwater salamander found in bodies of water in Mexico. They have the ability to regenerate body parts. Axolotl have gills and a caudal fin. Three Pairs of external gill stalks or Rami protrude from their head they are used to get more oxygen from the water.

4 Spirobranchus Giganteus or Christmas tree worm gets its name obviously from its pine tree like spiral structures or crowns. The crowns function to catch micro organisms and also help it breathe like gills.

5 Handfish a fish that has a hand like fin. They grow up to 15cm and are not very large.  These slow fish believe it or not prefer to walk rather than swim.

6 Ocean Sunfish this fish is amazingly large and heavy and despite its size its flat large face is also creepy. It can grow up to 2,200 pounds and is the heaviest bony fish in the world. It can be found in warmer waters around the world. These fish eat large amounts of jellyfish and have more eggs than any other invertebrate.

7 Oarfish They are extremely large and can grow to a length of 11 meters. they are the longest bony fish but are only wide as a ribbon. They live in an worldwide range and eat plankton, Squid, jellyfish, shrimp, small fish, and Krill.

8 Sparking Enope squid also known as Firefly squid. These squids are found in the west pacific ocean and give off a peculiar yet beautiful blue glow. The measure about 3 inches long and live for 1 year. It lights up its whole body to attract mates.

9 Spotwing Flying Gurnard these fish have notable pectoral fins and can grow to 38 cm in length. Although it has wings it can not fly.It lives in the Indian pacific ocean region but at least one species lives in the Atlantic.
