The Redback Spider
The Redback spiders live everywhere throughout the Australian continent. Female Redback spiders are black in color with a very apparent red or orange stripe that is visible on the back of the spider. The female Redback spider is dangerous and almost always connected to human deaths. Redback spider bites cause severe pain at the site of the bite and cause other symptoms to include: sweating, muscular weakness, vomiting, and nausea. Redback spider venom is a neurotoxin that affects the neurotransmitters causing there depletion. The Redback spider has caused several reported deaths of bitten human beings but none have died since the release of an antivenom. Over 250 bites receive antivenom treatment each year with many more cases most likely go unreported.

The Tree-Dwelling Funnel-Web Spider
The Tree-dwelling Funnel-web spider is also a resident of Australia though this spider is most commonly found on the east coast of the continent. Unlike the Redback spider the male Tree-dwelling Funnel-web spider is the killer, with venom five times as deadly as the female of the species. The body of the spider is glossy in nature with a color of either black or brown. The Tree-dwelling Funnel-web spider is extremely aggressive standing up on it hind legs when threatened and exposing their fangs. The venom of this impressive spider is a neurotoxin that cause the nerves to begin to fire rapidly. The bite of this spider can result in the following symptoms: salivation, muscle twitching, sweating, and tearing of the eyes. Many deaths have occurred from the bite of The Tree-dwelling Funnel-web spider before the introduction of an antivenom but even with the antivenom available the bite can be life threatening without immediate medical attention. The most interesting thing about the venom of these spiders is that most animals seem to be immune to their poison but it is extremely toxic to human beings and monkeys.

Brazilian Wandering Spider
The Brazilian Wandering Spider, also known as the “ Banana Spider”, can be found in the jungles of South America. It does not have a web like standard spiders and can be found wondering on the jungle floor, hence its name. Though the jungle is this spiders natural habitat it is also commonly found in peoples homes. This spider is a very aggressive spider and tends to be nervous. This spider is commonly found hidden in the vegetation of banana trees and has been found stowed away in banana crates. This spider is known to be the most deadly spider in the Americas. The venom of this spider can be fatal to a mouse in a dose as small as 0.006mg! The Brazilian Wandering Spiders venom is also a neurotoxin and is very painful due to it release of serotonin. An interesting side effect of this spiders bite is that it is known to cause priapism, an erection that can last longer than four hours. Now this is one hardcore spider.

Brown Recluse Spider
The Brown Recluse Spider, although nowhere near as deadly as the other spiders on this page, also deserves respect. The Brown Recluse spider is a small brown spider with a backwards violin shaped mark on the back of his head. This mark also led the spider to be known as the “ fiddle-back spider”. This spiders venom causes ulceration. The Brown Recluse’s bite does not tend to be painful at the time of the bite and some people will not even know they have been bitten. In the first few hours the bite will only appear small and red like a standard bug bite but within 24 hours will begin to swell and blister. If bitten in fatty tissue a deep lesion will occur that may not heal for several years! These bites without proper care have been known to lead to amputation of affected limbs. It is very likely that many people died of infection from the spider bites before the introduction of modern medical care. Below is a photo a Brown Recluse bite.

Black Widow Spider
The Black Widow Spider is known as the deadliest spider in North America. The female of the species is a very glossy black with an hourglass present on the thorax. The hourglass mark is usually red but can range from yellowish to orange in color. The male of the species is smaller than the female and is not dangerous. The black widow spider venom is a neurotoxin. The bite of the Black Widow is not generally known to be painful at the time of the bite but the bite will swell and two small fang marks will be seen. The symptoms of the bite are painful. The symptoms of the Black Widows bite include: localized pain in the back and abdomen, sever cramping of the abdominal muscles, nausea, labored breathing, tremors, profuse perspiration, high blood pressure, restlessness, and fever. Though most bites do not lead to serious long term side effects they have been known to lead to death.

What about the grand daddy long leg? Isn’t that deadly too? but then again how can that be when their mouths are too small to bite us? At some point and time I think each and every one of us has had one of those crawling on us. If they were so deadly the world would be in trouble. Because those things are everywhere and there are plenty of them.

Ya spiders scare me to but I think that if you stay away from them and they stay away from you there are just fine…
spiders were put on here for a reason and that is to eat bugs of all sort so if you half to kill them but if not don’t because you need to rember that they have a purpose here to.

the daddy long legs are very venemous but there fangs r to small to bite. i am pritty shore some daddy long legs can bite.but the ones u normally see around the house are not dangerous to us humans.i see them all the time and i have had a few crawl on me. so yes they are the ones that r very, very venemous but can not bite you. so dont worry. leave them alone and let them live cause they eat your insects like moths and flies ect.good house pet. they also can eat other spiders.lol pritty cool.

the myth surrounding daddy long leg spiders is that they are deadly. they’re venom is in fact not deadly to humans… the red back is soooo un-deadly its not even funny, i’m from sydney and they will give you a bight and some nasty side effects but they are nothing on the sydney funnel web. that is the real bad boy… this particular spider has a red under belly which is clearly visible when it rears up. the most important thing to remember if you ever come into contact with and angry funnel web is that they can jump up to 3 meters in a forward direction but only 1 meter high so if one ever rears up at you get up high quick!!!!!

How can those scientists stand touching those spiders all day.Even though I want to be a scientist and work in a lab all day,and be a lab rat, well I guess i could hang out with spiders all day.I guess I would be good at my job if I could do alot of testing on unknown spiders and give a name.But,I would not want to touch let alon even be neer a BROWN RECLUSE ALL DAY.

Lol, daddy longlegs are deadly. the way they figured it out was this: White tail spiders bites are actually harmless. but their main dietry intake consists of daddy long legs spiders. When a white tail eats a daddy long legs, the poison from the daddy long legs is absorbed into the white tail spider, and comes out in its venom. So white tails are only harmful to humans if they have been eating daddy long legs spiders! Seriously, look it up!
Daddy long legs are poisonous enough to kill a dog or cat, but not a human. and thankfully their fangs are too small to penetrata a mammals skin, so we are safe. they can only bite insects and other spiders.

Daddy-longlegs (Opiliones) – these arachnids make their living by eating decomposing vegetative and animal matter although are opportunist predators if they can get away with it. They do not have venom glands, fangs or any other mechanism for chemically subduing their food. Therefore, they do not have poison and, by the powers of logic, cannot be poisonous from venom. Some have defensive secretions that might be poisonous to small animals if ingested. So, for these daddy-long-legs, the tale is clearly false.
Daddy-longlegs spiders (Pholcidae) – Here, the myth is incorrect at least in making claims that have no basis in known facts. There is no reference to any pholcid spider biting a human and causing any detrimental reaction. If these spiders were indeed deadly poisonous but couldn’t bite humans, then the only way we would know that they are poisonous is by milking them and injecting the venom into humans. For a variety of reasons including Amnesty International and a humanitarian code of ethics, this research has never been done. Furthermore, there are no toxicological studies testing the lethality of pholcid venom on any mammalian system (this is usually done with mice). Therefore, no information is available on the likely toxic effects of their venom in humans, so the part of the myth about their being especially poisonous is just that: a myth. There is no scientific basis for the supposition that they are deadly poisonous and there is no reason to assume that it is true.
What about their fangs being too short to penetrate human skin? Pholcids do indeed have short fangs, which in arachnological terms is called “uncate” because they have a secondary tooth which meets the fang like the way the two grabbing parts of a pair of tongs come together. Brown recluse spiders similarly have uncate fang structure and they obviously are able to bite humans. There may be a difference in the musculature that houses the fang such that recluses have stronger muscles for penetration because they are hunting spiders needing to subdue prey whereas pholcid spiders are able to wrap their prey and don’t need as strong a musculature. So, again, the myth states as fact something about which there is no scientific basis.
In summary
For true daddy-long-legs, the opilionids, the myth is certainly false, and for the daddy-long-legs spiders it is certainly not based on known facts.

I have been bitten by a brown recluse .. it was no where near what the poor guy in that picture looked like . though I did becuame very very sick .Was in the hospital over night and had a whole in my leg you could stick a finger in . It has healed now. ALl that is left is a ugly brown scar but belive me it is not somthing anyone would want to go through !

Yes they are deadly but if you dont bother them they wont bit you. Today i saw three big spiders in my pool dont have any pitchers but i think 1 was a widow the 2ent one was a redback and the threed was a…..i relly dont know what i think it is but it had long lgs and a red and orange and it was like 2-3 inches long

My mother got bit by a black widow…
It’s not healing very well.
And if I get bit, because I’m allergic to spiders, I most likely will die…

i just recently got bitten by a brown recluce. it wasn’t horrible. it scared me, but it didnt rot or anything horrid like that. you dont need to freak out too bad, i went to the doctor and they said don’t even worry, just watch it. once your bitten all you can do is stop the spread and prevent infection

I have heard the same about Daddy Long legs and that there poison is deadly, but they can’t bite humans. I saw one up at Lake Izabella that was a monster, close to 5 inches in diameter. Never seen one that size since thank goodness.

i love spiders they are cool ons i was 4 or 5 years old i touched a mother black widow i almost got bit! but i forgive the spider now im 8 years old i discovered my first spider when i was 4 years old and i hold a taeranchla at the pet storewhen i was 7 years old! ther is no reason to hate them so please of the loving god do not hate them do not mess with them and they wont mess with you!
