First 10 Animals in Space

Here I have a list of the First 10 animals who entered space with astronauts.

  • Laika ( name used by the Western Press – actually the name of the breed to which the dog named Kudryavka, a female Samoyed husky belonged) The dog died in space. Laika belonged to USSR. It landed on space on 3rd of November 1957.              
  • Laska and Benjy (mice) – These mice were from the United States of America. They landed on the space on the 13th of December 1958. They re-entered the earth’s atmosphere but did not recover.
  • Able (female rhesus monkey) and Baker (female squirrel monkey). They too were from USA, and they made their entry to space on 28th May 1959. Able and Baker successfully returned to the Earth.
  • Otvazhnaya (female Samoyed husky) and an unnamed rabbit from USSR on 2nd July 1959. They recovered.
  • Sam (male rhesus monkey) from the United States of America on 4th December 1959. It recovered to Earth.
  • Miss Sam (female rhesus monkey) from USA on 21st January 1960. It recovered.
  • Belka and Strelka (female Samoyed huskies plus 40 mice and 2 rats from the USSR on the 19th of August 1960. They were the first to orbit and return safely.
