Wildlife Found at Virginia Key

Island off the coast of Miami, before Key Biscayne.

Group 1 went to the beach across the street from MAST Academy and explored the flora and fauna. We had to go to the auditorium first to be oriented of the wildlife we might see there and saw a PowerPoint on many different animals of the water.First we saw the fauna throughout the water such as the shrimp, crabs, jellyfish, seahorses, and other phylum. We worked in pairs in order to catch some wildlife in the water. One would hold a bucket to put the fish and the other would use the net top catch them. We later released them to preserve the environment. In the end, we found more of the shrimp family than the others. My partner and I did not find much but we found a big shrimp and a jellyfish and caught a lot of seaweed and shrimp (picture 2). In the water, there was a lot of grass in which you could find many different types of fauna. .there was a chicken liver sponge and it was called that since it looked like a liver. Afterwards, we saw the flora that surrounds the water, surrounds the water, such as the mangrove tree (picture 1). There were many other different types of trees such as the palm tree and the shorter palm tree.we were taught us about the Australian tree that was brought to withstand hurrincanes but it failed and is invasive. One interesting thing I learned was that the mangrove tree seed would float in the water until it was ready to start growing. We picked up trash because we had to try to clean up the beach. Two people even found a hubcap! We later had to go back since it was almost time to go. It was a wonderful experience and I wish to do it again sometime.
