What is a Terrarium

Terrarium or vivarium is medium or containers made of glass or transparent plastic containing plants, which cater for a variety of needs, such as for research, methods of planting and decorating.

It can be said that the terrarium is the most natural artificial biosphere because biological functions that occur in the terrarium was similar to that occurring in nature. So the terrarium can also be used as a mini biology lab.

Terrarium will display a miniature garden in a glass medium. Terrarium can simulate the actual conditions in the wild in the medium of glass. For example terarim can simulate desert ecosystems, desert ecosystems, tropical rain forest ecosystem and others.

First introduced in the UK terrarium. Beginning with a mini greenhouse in the United Kingdom and the nobility then terrarium became famous around the world, including in Indonesia.

Terrarium currently available, can be divided into 3 categories:

    1. Open Air Terrarium, the terrarium with the top open or closed. To make the miniature plants, such media is the most easy to use and maintain. You can even make the plants in the terrarium decoration of this type in a very short time.
    2. Closed Terrarium, terrarium is a tightly closed on all parts. The goal is to create a unique biosphere inside the terrarium. Terrarium is the most difficult to make and maintain. More challenges in making this type of terrarium. Some of the factors that should be of particular concern for a closed terrarium is a matter of the amount of water and proper lighting. Terrarium this type usually have a small upper to put plants and other materials inside the terrarium. Of course this can be a challenge.
    3. Terrarium Animals, as the name implies, this type of terrarium used to put small animals for display. For example, lizards, iguanas, frogs, small turtles or snakes. The goal is to display the replica of the real world fauna in the wild by moving into an attractive glass media.
