What Factors Threaten Our Wild Life? How Can These Threats be Overcome?

In this modern age we find that as we progress more and more the condition of our Earth becomes worse and worse. Our environment is under threat and with it our wild life.
The last hundred years or so saw the demise of the dodo, the passenger pigeon and other species. Today more and more species are threatened with extinction. If the threats persist, we will surely lose them forever.

More Land is Needed for Housing
The main thing that threatens our wild life is the ever-increasing demands made on the earth by man. Man’s population is increasing by leaps and bounds. It has already population is increasing by leaps and bounds. It has already passed the six thousand million mark and shows no sign of abating. More people means more land is needed for housing. Thus jungles are cleared for houses and towns. As we take up more space, less is available for our wild life. Consequently their numbers are reduced, sometimes to dangerously low levels.

The Decimation of the Jungle
Clearing up the jungle for living space is just one of the problems. Another is the decimation of the jungle for economic gain. Wood is valuable commodity. So much so some profit-minded businessmen simply cut down the jungles without caring a bit for the animals that live in it. These dumb creatures cannot protest. They simply perish. Occasionally a tiger may attack man because it cannot find any prey. Without exception this tiger is doomed to die by the hands of those who took away its jungle in the first place.

Proper Planning
This invasion of the natural habitat of our wild life by us has got to stop if we value them at all. Our population has got to be controlled and not allowed to get out of hand as it is now. This means proper planning on the part of our governments to keep their population in manageable proportions. We have to be careful whenever we consider cutting down our jungles in the name of development. We must not blindly develop our land only to discover later that we have lost our wild life forever. Wild life is an essential part of our environment. To destroy our wild life is to destroy our environment. If our environment is destroyed then we will perish too.

Hunting Animals
Hunting animals for sports and economic gain also threatens our wild life. The rhinoceros hunted for its horn. The elephant is hunted for its tusk. Rhinoceros horns and elephant tusks fetch lucrative returns for the hunters. Hunting these animals has been banned but it goes on unabated. The law – enforcers cannot cope with the number of poachers. So these animals remained threatened. The only way to deal with this problem is to educate the people about the cruelty perpetuated on these animals. Perhaps then they will stop this slaughter.

Intimately Connected With Our Environment
As long as we see the Earth as something to be exploited, then there is no hope. No matter what steps are taken to safeguard our wild life, sooner or later we will forget them and resume the destruction of the environment. Only if we can realize that we are all intimately connected with our environment and will be then desist from destroying it. At present this is not realized by most men for we are still bent on destroying our wild life and environment. Perhaps one day all men will realize this. By then it may be too late.

Yes, these are the threats but most government or some organizations are fighting to save the habitat for animals. Hunting are strictly prohibited in some countries. There are already laws regarding that!

We can’t seem to help ourselves. We are all so involved with ourselves we can’t see what is happening to the world around us. We need to open our eyes and do something constructive to reduce the desecration in the world. A realyy good article.

Buying products that rely on the environment being kept intact (eg. rainforest coffee and cachew nuts) are good ideas.

great article – change “tears” to “years” although tears makes sense too!
I think governments are foolish burning confiscated ivory – they should flood the markets with it CHEAP – thus anyone who wants it can get it cheaper than from the black market where costs are high. thus putting a dent in poaching.

Great write, although I echo that a change needs to be made from “tears” to “years”. Otherwise, a great article with good points and things for us all to think about.

Laws are needed for sure. The American Bison was hunted from something like 5 million down to 3,000 before it was protected by law.

A great one, Mr,. Ghaz. I read recently that here in Florida, the Core of engineers have been studying how to restore the Everglades to it’s original pristine condition and let the water flow naturally again. Maybe that’s a glimmer of hope for some of the wonderful creatures who live there.

Well done, my friend. Man is so destructive. Of course, I think we should use what we need. That said, do we really need all that we use? I dont think so! Do we really need to rip apart where wild life is just to build housing “with a pretty view?”—NO!

A great article Mr.Ghaz and the pictures are fantastic. I am a greater lover of animals. I agree that as man searches for more and space, it’s just going to be more difficult for our wildlife.

1. Excellent Article. You rightly said “Our population has got to be controlled and not allowed to get out of hand as it is now” to make more houses destroying the forest, the living heaven of animals.UNO, should interfere in the destruction of nature and not only against nuclear proliferation.

Mr Ghaz, this is so on my mind. If we don’t stop cutting down our rain forest, glutting on energy, and polluting we and the animals will vanish from the earth. It will no longer be able to support life. Earth will become a dead planet and our kind will be no more. How can we do this to our children’s children?

Mankind is the planets enemy,it it’s own worst enemy as well.Excellent piece of reporting here.
