Sulfuric Acid
A short report on sulfuric acid.
Sulfuric acid is a pollutant, the product of sulfur dioxide combining with water. Sulfuric acid is a chemical that is responsible for acid rain. It can be made in a laboratory, but is also found naturally when a sulfide material (copper sulfide, silver sulfide, etc.) is oxidized. Sulfuric acid is a commodity chemical, or a chemical that isn’t very valuable and sold in large quantities. It’s used in the production of fertilizers, for the removal of rust from rolled sheets and billets before being sold to a manufacturing company. It is also used to make the fabric nylon, and to refine natural gas. The Muslim chemist Jabir Hayyan discovered sulfuric acid in the eight century. Sulfuric acid comes in many concentrations, and is very corrosive and dangerous. It reacts violently with water, and should be handled with care, as it also will damage bare skin in high concentrations, or a least cause irritation.
