Mangrove Benefits

Mangrove forest ecosystems provide many benefits, both indirect (non-economic value) as well as directly to human life (economic vallues).

Mangrove trees are plants or plant communities that live between the sea and the land that is affected by tides. Mangrove habitats are often found at the meeting place between the mouth of the river and sea water which later became the protector of the land of big waves. The river flows to mangrove and fresh water at high tide, mangrove trees are surrounded by salt water or brackish water.

Mangrove forest and the area flourished in the delta area and a large river with a wide estuary. On the beach there are no rivers, narrow mangrove areas. Mangrove forests have a great tolerance to salinity and can be grown on land that has high salinity where ordinary plants can not grow.

Mangrove forest ecosystems provide many benefits, both indirect (non-economic value) as well as directly to human life (economic vallues).

Some indirect benefits as human consumption include:

Islands grow and stabilize the beach
One of the roles and benefits as well as mangrove ecosystems, mangrove root system is a complex and tight, dense to trap traces of organic matter and water-borne sediment from the inland sea. This process causes the sea water kept clean and thus preserve the life of the seagrass beds (seagrass) and coral reefs. Because this process is often said to be forming inland mangrove sediment and soil for growing developmental arrest of the coastline from time to time. Expand the boundaries of coastal mangrove growth and provide opportunities for terrestrial plants and thrive in the mainland. The roots of mangrove trees also keep the outskirts of the coastal erosion hazard. Viviparous fruit that can roam washed up settling on a shallow foundation can flourish and become a collection of new mangrove habitat. In the long period of time this new habitat can be expanded into its own island.

Purifies the water
Root respiration (peg roots) of the fires and tancang not only serves for the respiration of plants, but also play a role in capturing sediment and can clear the content of chemical substances from the water that comes from the land and flows into the sea. River water flowing from the mainland often carry chemicals or pollutants. When the river water through the roots of the post-fire tree fire, chemical substances can be released and the water continues to flow into the sea to be clean. Many people see this area as marginal land that is not useful, so fill it with soil to make it more productive. This is very harmful because it can shut down the root cause of respiratory and dead trees.

Venturing into the food chain
Mangrove leaves that fall and into the water. After reaching the base decomposed by micro-organisms (bacteria and fungi). The results of this decomposition is food for the larvae and small water animals which in turn fall prey to larger animals and land animals living or visiting in the mangrove habitat.

Protect and nourish
Cane roots of mangrove trees provide nutrients and a nursery area for fish and invertebrate animals that live in the vicinity. Fish and shrimp caught in the sea and coral reefs in the area before the adults need protection from predators and sufficient supply of nutrients in these mangrove areas. Various types of ground cover or shelter animals roost and foraging in the mangrove habitat.

Mangrove benefits to human

Coastal communities are generally aware that mangrove forests are very useful and can be utilized in a variety of ways to make ends meet. Mangrove tree is a strong woody trees and leafy. Starting from the root, bark, tree trunks, leaves and flowers of all human beings can be utilized.

Water fruit and young mangrove root bark can be used repel mosquitoes. Tancang juice can be used as a cleaning eye. Tancang bark is used traditionally as an upset stomach and reduce the heat. In Cambodia this material is used as an antidote to poison fish, fruit tancang can clean the eyes, skin and pain medicine in India is used to stop bleeding. Mangrove leaves when put into water can be used in fishing as an intoxicating narcotic fish (stupefied).

Preservative
Fruit trees can be tancang dyes and preservatives fabrics and nets by soaking in boiling water tancang the fruit. In addition to preserving the results have to be brown-red coloration to dark brown, depending on the thick and the length of soaking the material. Staining is widely used for the production of batik, to obtain the orange-brown staining. Air Cleaner bark decoction is used to preserve materials payang nets by fishermen in the area of Labuan, Banten.

Foodstuff
The leaves contain lots of protein. Young leaves of the tree fires can be eaten as a vegetable or vegetables. The leaves can be added to animal feed.
