Leylandii is a fantastic and popular choice for a hedge. Reasons for its popularity, besides the fact that it produces an attractive hedge, is that Leylandii has a rapid growth rate and is a durable plant which will grow well in most soil types.

Leylandii is able to gain up to four feet of growth per year, making it a perfect plant for hedges as it can provide additional privacy, screening or protection much faster than other hedge plants. Fertilisers can be added to the soil when plants are first put in the ground but this, along with ongoing use or fertilisers is not essential.

A good quantity of sun and the correct ground preparation will guarantee the best rate of growth. Leylandii grows more slowly in the shade but will still give you an attractive hedge if you are patient.

Those who enjoy gardening and can handle a bit of digging will find it fairly easy to plant a hedge on their land. Plan ahead so that new plants are not sitting around in pots, waiting to go into the ground for long. If you do need to leave them in their pots , take care not to let them dry out.

Plant nurseries and garden centres usually stock the two most common varieties of Leylandii, known as the Green and Gold Leylandii, both excellent options for establishing an attractive new hedge. Whilst gardeners often plant a hedge with only one variety, you can also mix plants to create your hedge if you prefer. Different plants have different growth patterns but many combinations of plants may be pruned to form one beautiful hedge.

Mark a straight line to follow for your hedge, by stretching a string across two wooden stakes. When you have positioned your line, you can either dig out a trench for planting in, or equally spaced holes. Spacing and hole size will be dictated by the size of your plants. Smaller seedlings are commonly positioned approximately two feet apart and the hole you prepare for your plants should be at least the depth of the pot and twice its width to make sure the roots have plenty of room to spread.

A new hedge should be watered regularly to begin with to help it take root. As soon as they have rooted your plants will start to fill out and grow into a stunning natural border.

Periodic hedge pruning is crucial to promote strong growth, good density and maintain a great shape.
