Is Wal-mart Too Liberal

Almost everyone living in the United States knows Sam Walton’s Walmart. We shop there for variety and lower prices. In spite of that, Liberals want to put their two cents worth into the company business. They hate the fact that Walmart stands for a low carbon footprint, low prices, and keeping public property public. So far the company has stood up for what is best for the country.

With Walmarts roots so deeply entrenched in American soil and a reputation for low prices and family values, who would dare criticize Walmart? They refuse to sell racy magazines and CDs with offensive lyrics, and Walmart is keen on family, low prices and a clean environment. Still, they face criticism from liberal groups. Walmart shareholder meeting are held in Arkansas and are fun parties. Shareholders come from all over the country to attend. Celebrities provide entertainment and high wattage shows. Shareholders activists are given three minutes to share their views from the podium. One complaint is that Walmart is too nice to unions and some suggested Walmart stop paying executives such large salaries. Others say the company makes too many concessions to liberals and it’s hurting business.

Liberals complaints are that companies, including Walmart should be more resistant to environmentalists aim to reduce carbon footprints. Rockefeller heirs have unsuccessfully urged the company to broaden it’s focus on renewable energy, which means more oil wells in Alaska and infringing on public land. Liberals say support for legislation to cap carbon emissions will only hurt families who shop Walmart. Walmart replies with, “Environmental initiative are not only good for the environmentalist but also good for business. Thank goodness for that.

Some observers think political discussions don’t belong at shareholders meetings. Braxton Hollis, of the University of Iowa said, “The corporate ballot box is not the place to have debates on broader social issues. People shop at Walmart for the low prices not because the company is politically correct. Recently Walmart has offered better health insurance, higher wages and in recent years even sold the Plan B emergency contraceptive pill. Staffer Bill Sanders says, ” The more Walmart tries to appease the Left, the more the Left will demand.”

I for one applaud Walmart for it’s stand on environmental issues, keeping prices down and goodwill toward it’s customers. In spite of all the complaints against the company, I hope they stand their ground.

Walmart has saved Americans tons of money over the years, and I am one of them. I’m not sure about the “right” and “left” thing, as I was always under the impression that the liberals got their reputation as being tree huggers for a reason. The “drill baby, drill” saying came from the right, not the left, and repubs are the ones who want to exploit our coastlines in Florida for more oil. Anyway, politics aside, I think they have done a lot to help Americans in a really tough economy.

Being a shareholder means you own a stake in the company and have a say about how it is run. It would be wrong (and possibly even illegal) to silence shareholders at a shareholder meeting.

The strength of Walmart is its large supply chain network. They are able to source products at a very cheap rate directly from manufacturers avoiding middle men.

Where I live Walmart is about the only major store to shop at. All the other stores are small mom and pop types.

They have to do what brings in business. Pleasing everybody will only damage the company, just like it damages the individual.
