Floods of 2007
Midwest flooding and its impact.
If you live in the Midwest you are sure to experience many of the quirks of nature. We have the famous tornado’s, and lightening storms and the oppressive heat in August.
We are also a place where there is flooding o n a grand scale. In 1950 we had the big flood. everyone called it worst flood ever. It happened because there was no flood control programs at the time. It served as a wake up call and the government began a project to put flood control dams on all the rivers in Kansas.
These dams created reservoirs for communities in need of a water supply to satisfy the hungry crops that need irrigation. it also provided a water supply for the growing communities water supply.
In the ensuing years many towns and communities were spared devastation from flooding, but not all. In 1993 there came the really big flood. it was so bad that most of the reservoirs over flowed.
It isolated farmsteads, cities and homes all over the state. many small dikes were breached and even some big ones.
But in 2007 there came the deluges that had rivers rising to new levels. Not only did the big streams rise but the small creeks that snaked through the farms lands. Together with the late frost in the month of April the flooding waters wiped out or heavily destroyed wheat crops not yet ready for harvesting.
this is what it looked like to many farmers throughout the state
