One effective way of disposing waste material from animals like cow dung etc. and from vegetable source is compost pit. A pit is dug in a large wasteland as shown in the figure. All the waste products of above- mentioned type are put into this pit and covered. The compost provides us with good quality of manure for the soil.

It is very important to note here that all types of waste materials like plastic and glass wastes cannot used for compost pit. Animal dung and human excreta are used for biogas. Biogas is a very useful fuel. It is used in kitchen to cook the food. The by – product from biogas plant is used as a natural manure in fields for agricultural purposes. This enriches the soil. It is of great significance for the growth of plants in fields.

All the waste materials do not get decomposed just by burying them even. If these are thrown in open space with out covering them, they can become a source of generate hose-files and mosquitoes.

It is not the proper way of dumping garbage in open space.

Even the burning of the waste materials is not the proper way to dispose them. This leads to pollution in the air. A part from pollution, burning leads to the spread of bad and intolerable smell in the air in its surrounding areas. Many waste materials like tin products and glass cannot be burnt. If water supply system of the city is nearby then it pollutes the water also. Due to seepage, the underground water many be contaminated.

The effective way to dispose of these waste materials is make a land-fill. If there is any low lying area, then it can be filled with these waste materials, like scraps, tin products, glass wastes, building materials, etc. when the land is filled and level of waste materials equals the level of its surrounding land, it is covered with soil. Now this land can be used as sites for building parks for community. Care should be taken in choosing such places. These should not be near a source of water supply for community. Otherwise water many get contaminated.
