Community Problems Due to Overpopulation

Some problems that may arise from an overcrowded community include:

1. Insufficient supply of water. People need drinking water and water for cooking, cleaning, and other purposes. A community can only provide for a specific number of people. Once this limit is reached, there will not be enough for the rest.
2. Starvation and malnutrition or poor diet. Like water, food is one of people’s basic needs. Because there are so many people who need to eat, theremay not be enough food for everyone. Many families may go hungry or become malnourished.
3. Unhygienic living conditions. Insufficient water and limited space for human use sacrifice the cleanliness of living conditions. Tools and materials are not properly washed. Human waste may not be properly disposed of because of lack of sanitation facilities.
4. Infectious diseases. People in crowded places live close to one another. This condition makes the transfer of diseases from person to person easier.
5. Disturbance of ecosystems. More people make more wastes. Waste materials accumulate fast in overcrowded places. Many of these wastes find their way on the streets, canals, and rivers. Some eventually reach bodies of water and endanger aquatic life.
6. Unemployment. There may not be job opportunities for everyone.
7. Crimes. People find ways to survive. Some resort to stealing, human trafficking, buying and selling illegal drugs, and other society problems.

If the environment is dirty and littered with hazardous materials, then it is said to be polluted. Pollution is a condition wherein the environment becomes unfit for human survival. Substances or materials that make the environment dirty and unsafe are called pollutants. Pollution problems are very likely to occur in an overcrowded place.
